I had no good name for this field until recently as it had no interesting features & is not a site of any description but at least now I can refer to it as above. ;D

Cru'dad joined me gridding this field for the first time. We did 4 hours & were expecting a bit of a slog, so what we ended up with was a pleasing day:

7 Roman Coins - 1 good one of Marcus Aurelius, Dupondus, AD177, RIC 1219, Winged Thunderbolt.
Livery Button
Medieval Casket Key :)
A really cool Lady Figurine which I think is an 18th C Pipe Tamper - Anyone seen that type of clothing before, looks pre-17th C & maybe not an English style either (famous person?) :icon_scratch:

Its my fav artifact in awhile :icon_thumright:

Marcus Aurelius, nice :icon_thumleft: ossi black?

Black what? :dontknow:

I think ossi means the colour of your coin. Doesn,t look like the others, which have been affected by human chemicals like fertilliser. Yours is brown to black which means there been in the presence of a natural sulphide mineral. The 3 ways i can think off hand are being in a deep well .Sulphide is present in ground water at depth. Soil that once had a lot of volcanic activity or pottery made from clay containing sulphide. Some roman pottery was imported and is brown or black from what i can remember from your posts. Roman pot hoard Seems you got the left over or ?

I see, its actually a reddish dark brown (picked up some of the naturals irons in the water logged ground). We were surprised when it came up as we already knew that all the Roman Coins so far (about 18 I think) from this field have been very poor. Its hard to explain how some miss the worst of the chemicals & plough etc.. However, this one was dug at the limits of Dad's detector, somewhat below modern plough depth. It was in a different deeper coloured band of clay, nearly in the natural. This would have helped somewhat, although the main reason with this one was probably a much better quality of Bronze. The other larger coins pictured with it are 'AS's & this one is a Dupondis, I forget, because they change so much over the periods what mix of copper this is, but some AS's are nearly pure Copper, some Brass, other Bronze etc.... It is also clear the plough has not hit of the protective patination which would speed up the chemical attack.

How deep are these fields ploghed Cru? Below the plough is quite deep, even with a large one like the Dupondius. Here the plough goes down around 50cm/20".

Great finds m8 that figure looks interesting, I am not convinced that its a pipe tamperer, the back has that flat undecorated area, with what looks like a cavity inside, could there have been a peg or rod connecting the figure on to something else, what are the dimensions of the figure? also the figure apears to have bare legs ........one to think about

I was also thinking 'Tudor period' for the figure, because of the ruffle neck piece she is wearing.

But altogether another good day for you and Cru dad.

Our ploughs in this area used to go 12", however with fuel prices very few farmers plough this deep anymore. This coin was about 10" down in a band of orange (ish) clay which hardly ever gets ploughed up unless it was a deeper than normal plough.

I know, I'm not happy with it being a pipe tamper either, only things that made me think it was - hatched back of head for striking matches (seen similar, Shaun7 has one) & the size & end piece are consistant with others. However, it has a hole in the bottom running the length of the inside which is why I thought it couldn't be one :dontknow: The peg idea crossed my mind & I thought boy & girl either side of a clock mantle :icon_scratch: I really am not sure at all what it is, but it doesn't stand well on its own.

Interesting find!! Really cool

I'll give you a dollar to tell me where your field is. HA HA !!!! As usual your finds are great. Dennis.
