pure zinc indian head cent?

Ive been collecting for some time now and I just cant get an appreciation of my intellect on these forums.

Suggest you swing your mighty intellect down to the Coins forum here. You are in the "What Is It" forum - and if you don't want folks telling you what they think you have based on what is commonly accepted (like from Red Book and similar sources) you may want to go down with the "experts" on such things to display your one-of-a-kind finds. Most up here are folks looking for answers - not affirmation.

Here's the link:

If there is "rust" on the coin, it could have been in a steel/iron metal container of some sort when it was lost. The container since corroded away and the rust fused to the copper, as dissimilar metals tend to do.

I do have a question for you mmmikey. Do you or someone you know have a metal detector? Apologize if you have answered this question in your other once in lifetime/only coin of its kind posts.

I am curious what all these coins are ringing in as? Did your aluminum Mercury dime ring in as aluminum? Is this coin ringing in as zinc?

Seems to me you could save a lot of people a lot of time and take this first step if you have one at your disposal. I don't imagine anyone is getting any enjoyment out of telling you what you don't want to hear.

If I were finding all these unknown variety of coins that you are, and who am I to question your expertise, I would quietly be getting them graded and authenticated and putting them to auction. I would probably sell that dime to a science lab so they can determine how aluminum and silver of the same size can weigh the same weight.

Three that I have found at 2 different angles, minus a coincidently 1905 ratty IHP that I gave to a lady cashier at Jack In The Box.

Let me go back to the beginning of the thread, if I may. You believe the coin may be made primarily of zinc, if I read correctly. Before going any farther, let me pose what may be an important question. What were the circumstances of its discovery? Was it found in the ground by a coin shooter or other hobby hunter? Was it found in a collection with indeterminate origin prior to that? Some other circumstance? It is important to know because different environments affect zinc differently.

I never exclaimed to be metallurgest or chemist but I think one of the many uses for zinc are sacrificial anodes. Anyone can look for themselves to see the properties of zinc as a sacrificial anodes. As a matter of fact I see similar shiney points on the coins that Charlie P. (NY) posted.
