on first look in photos ---it looks good to me -- heck I'd give $20 for it , all day long (even if its a "decent" copy it would be worth more than $20 to most folks ) --- psst that buckle looks like it did come outta the ground  --just not "found" by you. is all.

I'm with Ivan. Looks real enough. If not real, it's a good copy. An excellent buy at $20. I'd get it straightened and wear it!

If it's a copy, it's a good one. Even the wear pattern looks right. And if it is a copy, it looks like it was a lost copy that was found in the ground.

Ones like this photo had a narrow tongue which is pre-1862.

When did you buy it?

From my perspective, that is one of the Best Buckles I've had the privilege of viewing on this site.

Hi Daryl,

I have always enjoyed reading your posts on the site and trust your opinions a lot. Yeah, I noticed the wider tongue which was something I wondered about. So, that doesn't indicate a replica, but a later production? I bought it about a week ago. BTW, I am a neuro PhD student at Tulane. Do you do bench research?

Thank you to all who have written in-- I love the idea that there is a place for people like us who have treasure in their veins to meet, discuss and learn. Before this web site existed, I was just a nut..Now there's a community.

Arguably a community of nuts, but a community nonetheless... :icon_jokercolor:

Nate, I thought the buckle was suspect at first due to the wide tongue, or that it was a later version, but not being very knowledgable in this part of the relic world I went to the one website that is fairly decent with photos of both legit ones and copies.

After looking I am somewhat satisfied I think you have a legit one and it is similar to the last one on the page,(P1603) not identical but at least that one also has a wide tongue.

and fakes on his website:

Either way, a great bargain for that price!

Besides the wide tongue. It looks like some weird casting marks on the back. I've never seen anything like them.

Like the many varieties of authentic buttons, your plate is close enough to all the authentic plates I found that I would be hard pressed to call it a replica...

Great purchase, great belt plate.

I hope you can get it authenticated should you choose to do so.

Just for fun, here are a couple of the other treasures that came with the lot when I purchased it.

Right on, Ivan!! I also believe it to be a "dug" relic, and pretty certain it was made before 1862!! Very nice find!! A steal at 20 bucks!! Great hunting and good luck!!! Regards, Richard.
