I am in SW Florida and I water hunted at night with an ATX. It always reacted to lightning. I started thinking of it as a lightning detector. I used the ATX for a couple of years around lots of lightning and to answer your question, it never had any adverse effect on the detector.

Man was struck and killed by lightning this weekend on Siesta Beach.

Another guy struck and killed yesterday or the day before.

We have a phrase that is repeated during SkyWarn training (weather spotting):

If you hear it, fear it.
If you see it, flee it.

A bit corny but easy to remember.

I believe I am right in saying there is no "heat lightning" or "heat thunder". If there is thunder, there has been lighting. The general rule is that lightning can strike a good 10 miles ahead of a storm. Storms can come up on you quickly. Be careful.

I think I'm going to get a lightning detector. The problem in the mountains is they can cause huge fires. Saw some on ebay for close to $30. I miss Cocoa Beach...

edit: I ordered one. I got the "Acurite"...it seemed to get some good reviews

Re: lightning detectors ... they work pretty well. We used to use one at the high school where I taught and was a track official. We always had one on the field during practice, track meets, and other outdoor athletic activities.

I've found that if you have an old a.m. radio, it will crackle with static when storms are in the area. Sometimes you can tell where the storm is if you know where the radio station you are listening to is located. Just another fun fact.

And yet another...

This makes 5 deaths so far for 2018 for Florida.

And yet another strike hitting 2 ... one killed... other unknown status.
