Pros vs Cons of Detecting Club Membership

Just be careful. Don't trust that everyone that shows up to those places is ok just because they like the same hobby. Some people might be great- until they're NOT. It seems like most people on here carry arms so to them it's probably not an immediate concern!

Being female, you probably have a little different perspective than we guys do. Thanks for your input.

Stepping aside and trying to not be so passionate about my beliefs, I can and do understand everyone's perspective here. Perhaps that's why I have never joined a club in the past, but I guess things change or perhaps I'm just tired of always hunting alone.

But, I definitely see your all's view point, they are not for everyone, I'm going to try one out, perhaps I might feel like you all do, perhaps I might fit in, depends on the group I guess, and me.

I think it all has to do with how much time an effort we can invest in hunting that dictates wether we club hunt or solo hunt. My time is limited. I have belonged to a club but never really felt I belonged, not enough time invested with the club. Here I feel I belong. I have no fear of my hunting ground being taken. If you can hunt where I hunt more power to ya, I could learn from you! I enjoy seeing what everybody finds! Problem is limited time to view all of T Net!
I am inspired by all of you! No pressure

This is my utopia!

That makes sense. it's safe and sometimes more convenient to hang out online and enjoy other's points of view and finds. If you think they're spinning a yarn, you click off the thread. No harm no foul. In person it's not so easy to bow out of a conversation or back away from someone who you suspect is well, suspect.

You most definitely are NOT the only one that doesn't post finds. For some reason, the people that lurk on the political sub forum never post finds. I always thought they weren't really detectorists. Seems they always have the most advice and opinions on finds and techniques. I for one quit even reading their opinions since I didn't think they knew what they were talking about. Maybe you should reconsider posting so your opinions will matter to people that might be mistaken about you still being active and even having experience.

Hey Keppy, I know what your saying, heck I don't know, maybe just tired of always being alone, so perhaps its more a social thing that I desire or maybe even need.

Old Dude, I do understand what your saying, but if people have to see what I find to believe in what I say, well its their loss.
It just goes against who I am to go posting this or that, besides most of everything I have found has been given away now, jewelry all sold till this year perks. Most my relics given away to younger people to spark their imagination and wonder over our past. I have the memories that's all I need.

TY though I do understand what your saying.

I think clubs can be great. As the president of the Westchester/Putnam Metal Detectors Club Metal Detectorists & Archaeological Society let me speak a bit about our club.

Our club has many different reasons to exist, but the main one is club hunts. We obtain permission to hunt private property, mostly old farms and orchards for unseeded hunts. We've found all sorts of old items and it's a great time for all of us. Some of the things found in just the last year include, seated dimes, large cents, Spanish silver, a nice Barber half dollar, 3 cent silver, a great Fugio, Connecticut copper and many other great coins. Our members have also come up with gold and silver jewelry on these hunts. We also do a seeded club hunt on the beach in conjunction with our annual picnic. Although I don't have many, I've included a few photos below of some of our club finds. Nobody shows up early and hunts any of our sites before the club hunt.

The other reason for our club is the friendship and enthusiasm we share for the hobby. We meet about 8 times a year and do have our finds for the month. Yes, the same people tend to win the different categories we have, but they are also the ones who have the most experience detecting, spend the most time detecting and have great machines that they have learned how to use. We have great monthly finds, but I can't say I ever suspected anyone submitting something as a find when they actually bought the item.

Our club has been growing and we encourage new members. We have a great hobby and how can you not share that enthusiasm? We also have a nice Christmas party where we all get to meet the spouses that put up with our constant desire to go out detecting.

Join a club or start one and make it what you want.
