One suggestion for the future - 'gently' include the fact that artifacts, if left in the ground, will never be seen by ANYONE, and most will eventually decompose. Most archeologists try to use the ploy of "they're destroying our history" when they badmouth detectorists.
Many of these same critics have basements filled with poorly documented relics that no one will ever see. And most sites will NEVER have a formal 'dig'. We help bring history to light in a way that makes it interesting for the layman, and often preserve what we find.

Thanks Swingman, I'll include that thought in our programs. But believe it or not, I belong to an archeology group and they actually use some metal detectors to look for artifacts. In fact our president of that club uses a metal detector. So in some cases we are making some progress.
