Hi guys this is my first post and my first detector! I'm having some possible issues I would like some feedback on. I'm not sure if its broken or if i'm doing something wrong.

I follow the instructions on ground balancing by setting the sens to 10, disc to 0 and ground to 10. then i turn the detector on and hold the coil about 6-10 inches above the ground hit the pinpoint button. after I hit the button and hold it down i lower the detector to the ground.... In the manual it says to lower coil to the ground then slowly turn the ground knob down until you here the whining then back off... well when i lower the coil to the ground I automatically here the whining and it just gets louder when i turn the ground knob down... i've tried doing this is several different areas incase i was over metal or high mineral levels in the ground... I'm not sure what the problem is as it has worked the correct way a couple of times....

2nd. Yesterday I went to use my detector at a possible old church site on my girlfriend's families land. when i tried to ground balance the machine I was getting random beeps (like flase hits) ever 5 seconds. I had to turn the sensitivity down to like 3 in order to stop the beeps but then it would only pick up a dime I put on the ground about every other time i passed over it... is this a problem with my machine or is there something i'm missing?

i was no near any power lines also..

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

I've had a CZ20 for about 7 years. I hold the coil 1 inch over the ground while turning the ground knob until I hear the buzz, then I turn it back just a hair. They running the machine on the red preset number. The other problem you mentioned sounds like a major mineralization condition? Or a problem with a pc board component? You may want to call Fisher?

Before ground balancing, set the disc knob to 0 and sweep it over the ground. If you hear any tones from targets you will need to move and try again. Once you know there are no targets or junk in the ground, then try GB.

If this is a CZ-20, and you send it to FT, it's gonna cost somewhere around 500 bucks because you may be told you have a bad board. In fact, they have to replace the interface and front panel as they no longer use the CZ-20 front end.

Even better, as I found out, they apparently do not know or have torque settings for the housing screws and may crack one or more screw boss' on the housing, causing it to fail at some point. This in turn may set one of those housing screws to float around in the housing. Nice rattle effect.

So definitely make sure you're following the GB procedure over clear ground. Better you make sure it's working than go through the BS I did with my perfectly good and operational CZ-20 when I mistakenly sent it in to get gaskets replaced.

It's a great machine, still have mine and it works fine, even with the rattle. See if whoever you bought it from can GB the unit or if you have a local user who has some experience with one or more CZ units.

you said you hold yours an inch above the ground and then start moving the ground knob... I thought you were supposed to hold it 6-12 inches above the ground, press and hold the poinpoint button then lower it and then while still holding the pinpoint knob start lowering the ground... is this right or am i doing it wrong?

I answered this yesterday and today the post isn't here.

I found the ground balance with the pinpoint button is the slow way. I set it in AUTO over clean ground and pump it up & down while adjusting the GB knob to get a steady tone with out a raise or lowering of pitch. I never use the pinpoint button at all and have it smeared with silicone sealant.
