Invenio Pro Adventures

Thank you :) I am considering buying one. For what ever reason i do not know . Getting my age it is harder getting down and digging . Do you have a seeded test garden ?
Looking like decent weather for once here in eastern PA this weekend. I'm hoping to get out Sunday with the Invenio for its trial run and try to shoot a video.

Sibbley do you think you can tell a coin from a piece of junk type trash ? I realize it is VERY early in your use of it.
You know, I've been thinking about this question. The Invenio has AI machine learning. Maybe once I get targets out of the ground and compare the actual target to the analyzed image and set the machine to learn, you may be able to tell a coin from trash. Just a thought, need time to use the machine and see what happens.

Nice, I got out this afternoon. Temp hit 39F so I ran out to my 1860's farm permission. Totally frozen ground so I knew I wouldn't be digging anything today. I did get a few hits that I scanned so here we go. Pay no attention to the dates and time. I forgot to set both when I installed the larger battery in the control box.

Sure looks like a spoon!

A couple of other scans. No idea on these but the first looks interesting.

Going to another permission tomorrow, maybe I'll have better luck with the ground.

Hit my other permission today. Tried to get the shovel in at a few spots and couldn't. Totally frozen so I just bailed. I want to dig these targets and see how they resemble the scans so if I can't dig, screw it.

Maybe next weekend will be better. Forecast is for upper 40's or lower 50's all week with almost 50 on Saturday. Ground should thaw by Saturday. I have a new permission I have yet to get out to so maybe Saturday. There was a house and barn on the property on the 1870's map and I think Lidar has given me the location of the house.

Went out to the 1850’s School permission with the Invenio today. Temp was 52F when I left the house with a slight breeze. In the 2 miles it takes to get to the school the wind picked up and made the temp feel much colder. Still better than the last two months though.

My wife came along to man the control box while I swung the coil. I had thought the machine would work better as a two-man setup, but it doesn’t. I found without the box hanging from my belt I wasn’t able to see the targets to know where to swing when I wanted to scan. So, we were in very close proximity to each other which made viewing and swinging difficult. It just seems much easier to control the box and the coil.

I scanned 7 targets but only flagged 5 for recovery. Part of the reason for this is the Invenio hits on everything. It was kind of hard to re-swing to find the targets again in this heavy iron site. It gets crazy having to clear the screen all the time to find the target I was working with again. The machine seems to have great recovery speed. It will show several targets in a very small area.

I did hit on a couple of large targets that showed between 18-22 inches deep, which I didn’t feel like digging today. The last time my wife and I dug a large target it took over an hour. I was just not into that today. I marked them with flags so I can go back and work with them. With any luck the flags will still be there when I get back. The neighbor keeps an eye on things there so I hope no-one will take them.

My streak of finding at least one coin is still intact. I found an IHP right before I was ready to clean up for the day. Not with the Invenio though. After digging the 5 targets found with that machine, I got out the Manticore which is still king at pulling coins out of the iron mess with that M9 coil. Don’t get me wrong, the Invenio can most-likely do it too, I just need to get more experience with it. I also need to come up with a better plan for using the machine.

I did several things wrong today.

  • I forgot to mark the scan images and screen shots with VDI and depth
  • I did not bring a note pad to document the target information of the actual recovery with the Scans and screen shots from the machine.
  • I didn’t take pictures of the recovered items in their respective holes to correspond with the machine scans.
  • I didn’t take GPS coordinate readings. Although they may not be accurate enough using a phone.
All in all, I have a lot to learn about this machine. I also have to experiment with the best practices for using it. There are tons of settings that can be changed. I need to experiment with adjusting those to get the best out of the machine. I also need to learn how to properly utilize the machine learning (AI) feature.

The machine appears to still have the same problems as all machines when it comes to distinguishing a bent iron nail from non-ferrous. However, as I will show soon, you can tell from the scanned image the target is most likely a bent nail.

I will post images as once they are downloaded from the control box as well as photos of the actual dug targets.

The IHP: Looks like 1898, it was heavily corroded I soaked it in MSR Bronze and Copper cleaner over night to get the date. Another mistake yesterday, I forgot to take pics of the coin out of the ground to show the heavy corrosion. The third pic includes the two nails found in the hole with the coin. That Manticore is certainly impressive at pulling these coins out of the iron.

One of the targets I lost. Interesting looking target. I wish I would have remembered to mark the depth and VDI on the 3D image. This image really does show the way the machine will hit on multiple targets in a small area.

Another example of how the machine hits on multiple targets. This represents a nail and an aluminum shard. Notice the green in the upper target, a bent nail.

These images show that the machine still sees bent nails as non-ferrous items (green in second image). You can see from the first image that the target is most likely a bent nail (lower target). The image shows two targets, and I found two.

I didn't do 3D scans of these. I should have but didn't.

Interesting thread. Thank you for taking the time.

Took the Invenio out for a short time today. Found a promising signal that turned out to be more interesting than I had originally thought.

We're looking at the item to the left. VDI and Depth shown in next image.

Upon recovering the item I thought it was a bolt head. Turned out to be something with a shank and a pin through it. I feel like I should know what this is, but I have no clue. It's about the size of a nickel. Depth was about 6 inches. It was lying flat in the ground, maybe that's what the VDI of 82 was about? Either that or the green non-ferrous item next to it was throwing it off. I never did find that. Could have been in the side wall. The lower item would have been another hole I did not dig.

I was out last Sunday with the Invenio. I made a short video, but the audio is horrible because of the wind so I've decided it's not worth using. I made some discoveries about the machine, more on the dislike side.

If you feel the need to buy this thing, make sure you only take it out while having someone along to mark targets. While trying to mark my targets by planting flags, the control box would slide off the mount on the harness belt and jolt my neck. Not fun.

Take to machine to heavily hunted out sites. Sites with many targets (heavy iron) are a serious pain in the butt. I think the machine gets confused by nails. Shows non ferrous targets, but I only dug nails. Possibly halo issues?

Trying to use the machine in heavy iron infested sites results in "expert" mode causes heavy drift and you will be constantly resetting the drift. "Expert" mode is for scanning targets to see what's below the surface.

The machine and control box will cause fatigue! I was out for 2 hours and felt it afterwards. The control box is mounted to the lower belt on the harness that comes with the machine. The strap for the control box goes around the neck. Even though most of the control box weight is at the waist, the strap around your neck still causes fatigue.

I bought the more expensive pro model to get 5khz, 14khz, and 20khz frequencies. I have yet to use any other than 14khz. The cheaper standard version might be the way to go for anyone doing normal relic hunting. It only includes 14khz.

In the coming weeks I will be trying the machine at some sites that are old with very few targets. I'll be using a larger coil at these sites and hopefully get an idea of the machines depth for relic hunting as I plan to bury some different sized targets. This will also allow me to see if scans of targets can be made at fringe depths on smaller targets.

I will also be testing the machine for use finding large deep targets such as oil tanks.

The machine definitely has uses, I'm not sure the average relic hunter will have much use for it. It does sort of take the fun out of hunting for relics.
