I have seen several asking about using a probe to recover coins and they were advised to use everything from a screwdriver to a bayonet. A year or so a go I ran across another detectorist and got to talking abour that very thing. He gave me a probe he made along with a prying tool to get a coin out without marring it or damaging the ground. The probe is made of solid brass with a small ball welded on the tip. You can probe and hit the coin without scratching it with the brass tip. The pry tool is much like a screwdriver but is flat and curved tobetter lift the coin. I'm not very good at it but he claims he used them all the time. So here's a picture for those who might like to make one for themselves. They shouldn't be too hard to make. Monty

Ive seen these carried in pouches to the hunt site but never used , at club hunts that is, Cutting plugs just seems much easier , One guy made one out of the brass rod from the toilet tank float. Sometimes in the neighbors yard I will pinpoint a target and place a white golf tee at what I think is dead center and come back after I have spotted four or five and dig with out making a mess . I may try one of these next time . They dont seem to get as nervous when I carry small digging tools !!

Where can i find those tools?? The park here has great looking grass and i would hate to keep making 4" holes every time i find something.. ;D

The guy I met was making them at one time, but he had some heart problems and he suddenly quit answering his emails. I am beginning to think the worse. All I had was his email address and no reply there. And it's been nearly a year since I corresponded with him. Monty

hey guys ,i know the upper one in the picture can be bought at Waynes Detector Sales in OK. City. i bought one there but it'll scratch alot easier than the other one but for a new park its good for clad coins.
