Dagaro, could you give us an idea of the size of the items?

DizzyDigger: Sure, the baseplate is 7 1/2" long and the width of the piece is roughly 1 1/2". I'll throw in a pic with a quarter for perspective.

In looking at the great photos posted in that auction, I am having a difficult time envisioning how they could function as door rollers.

Here's what I see so far .
the item was bolted down and had a shaft going through the slot on the side in which the end a shaft rode on the wheels .
like today's pillow block bearing would work.
the lid is decorative and meant to be seen .

Thanks everyone for your replies. I think DCMatt nailed it! I looked at other examples online and it sure looks like a match. It makes a lot of sense, I've found 7 axeheads at the site and various other tools that would have required sharpening. Treasurenet comes through again. Now if I could only find the grindstone..but probably a bit heavy for my backpack. Here's a pic of the bottom.
