Pressure flaking a point- start to finish.

Here's the process, I cheated some though. I was going to go through from the cobble, to the spaul, to the percussion flaking and then the pressure flaking but after digging around in my bag of flintknapping material I found I didn't have a lot of good material left. Furthermore I had already knapped all the big stuff into preforms- had some Dacite, quartzite, and noviculite pieces but nothing really nice so... I thought I could at least demonstrate part of the process- the pressure flaking. I used a pre cut slab (cheating) the end result is the same it just saves A LOT of time in trying to spaul a decent piece. Hope you guys aren't too disappointed - First picture is my tool kit, two antlers, a rock for percussion flaking and grinding, and a piece of leather.

Well, not perfect but pretty cool eh??! I made one and he made one, can you guess who made what? (he's 10 and this was his first ever point start to finish)
Sorry I didn't see this until today! Awesome job gentleman. I think your son made the black one. Tell him he did a great job, form me. I'm glad you two finally got to do this together. Looks like you don't have to get that skate board after all!

Thanks guys. He's pretty proud of it, has it in his display case with his authentic ones, and yes, he made the black one. Norcal- sorry man, there's no way the indians made most, if any of their stuff in 3-5 minutes, the only exception being maybe something like a Madison point where you can knock of a flake and just quickly rough it in as a little triangle. The bigger stuff takes much longer to do, no matter how good you are. There's modern day flintknappers that are every bit as good as if not better than their ancient couter parts and they can whip out the points pretty quickly but not in 3-5 minutes. A real expert knapper can make nice mid grade points and knives in 10-15 minutes. Anyways, it's fun and it keeps the kid and me both out of trouble.... (that's a full time job some days) Well, happy hunting to all..

Hey canoman,

I bet I can make one of those with a small grinder.
I used to work for a metal factory and I also have done some of my own metal work.
Anyway, Nice work man! ;D

Great job you two,,,, especially for a first time, you should be proud of yourself ;D You have got me very interested in these points,,,, just a blow that we do not have much here as I have said before.....

Thanks guys and God bless
Peter
