Hello All,

I went with Rodeo Recon back to try and find the rest of the snake belt buckle today. Didn't find it--and as the number of targets dwindles at the site, I get less and less optimistic that it's there... :-\

But we did have a good day today. :)

When we first got on the site, I dug a flat button--followed immediately by a coin:

When I was looking at it, I couldn't recognize anything. :icon_scratch: On the way out there in the car, Rodeo and I'd been talking about the fact that we'd gotten a complete set of the IH "fattys" except for the 1860 between all of us--and we said that we ought to be able to find a Flying Eagle Cent sooner or later. ::) Well, I saw the date--1857--and realized that our morning speculation on the drive over had come true. It's a rough looking coin, but I'm very pleased with it.

There was something else we'd talked about for a while--and that was finding an Old, Good piece of jewelry sooner or later--either silver or gold... But back to the story...

So we kept hitting the field. Rodeo managed a nice flat button identical to the one that I'd found the day before at the site--BENEDICT & COE backmark.

And here is a photo or two of each of us digging like crazy fools on such a fine Fall day:

Rodeo soon called me over--and I knew he'd found something good. When I saw it in the dirt I knew that another goal on our list had become a reality. It is a Silver child's ring--most likely pre-CW, and made from coin silver. The design on it is very simple. I think this is a Fantastic find--and it is one that honestly Moved me standing there in that field today. Wondering about the life and fate of that child that grew up, had kids of their own, grew old, and passed on--or perhaps died early, leaving the ring behind to be worn on a necklace and treasured by a grieving parent.

Moments like that are what good metal detecting is made of.

We kept at it, picking up bits of brass bent up by the plow, suspender clips, lantern pieces, and lead bits. I managed to nab an Eagle button (turns out it still has some gilding on it). I don't know How that button survived the plow. Rodeo got two backs from two piece buttons today (likely Eagle buttons as well). :-\

I also finally got a suspender clip that matched another one--but they're from the same site (and one is just a tiny piece). Every clip I have Ever dug has been different except for this one and a piece off its twin (in the upper left hand corner of the photo of all my finds, cleaned).

So, here are the before/after photos:

And my finds from the hunt, cleaned up:

I forgot to put a HUGE button in that photo, because I thought it was a brass washer (someone had punched a hole through it close to where the shank had broken off). Then careful cleaning revealed an ornate design. :) This close to being my biggest dug flat button.

Both of you had a great hunt and again the photos are terrific, nice area to hunt, (no briars  :D)    I like Rodeo's ring find the best out of the super mixture of finds for the hunt, the large button is kind of neat, although I never found one with a hole drilled in the center that I can remember.

Don

Thanks for the reply, Don.  :)  I think Rodeo's ring is the find of the day as well. The hole in the button is punched through just off-center enough to see where the shank attached on the back.  I've never seen one holed through the center either, and I have no idea why that was done to the button.

Regards,

Buckles

Congrats to you two BB. You guys are like field vaccums.
Way to go on all your finds but the Flying Eagle & child's ring are super.
Man, I wish I could find an open field like that. :'( Seems like it would take years to go through that much land.
I can see the gold gilt on the sweet eagle button too. Nice.
As always, thanks for the great post & pictures.

Thanks, Doug! I call the 12 x 10 concentric on the uMax the Bean Field BLASTER. :D

We dont go through all of the land--just the important parts like where the house, barn, privy, roads, and wells were.

Nice job Will, you guys kicked butt again.

Great finds Will you know I like the buttons and the child's ring is something to cherish forever. Your pictures are A1 great presentation. Not only do your finds amaze me but the fact that you can go from Predawn to dusk shows your love of the hunt.

Beautiful Day Buckle's.....The 57' FE is sweet, only because I found one over the summer ;D Good eye on the rolled Brass w/the lip,I can't find anything like it on the net, first thing I would want it to be would be a Breastplate of some kind.Definetley has the lip/lead look.....But the pattern has me to believe it's probably a rosette, but who owned it and when??? I really hope you can prove something else  Awesome Dig's to you and RR....Silver is Cool!!!!!!

Buckleboy,
Those are awesome finds bro. The flying eagle cent, holy cow those things are rare, high on my wish list. I love suspender clips cause they are something personal to someone. The child's ring...that's the treasure. At my old favorite one room schoolhouse site this spring i dug one very similar and i remember being on my knees with it in my hand and looking around in the woods where it came from and could just imagine the kids laughing and playing during recess. It was one of those "moments" like you mentioned in your post. A week later at a family gathering I had the pleasure of giving that ring to a distant cousin. She's a first grader and when i was showing off some of my recent finds to the family i let her try it on and it slid on her finger perfectly. Well, that was it. It was hers to keep and the next time i hit that schoolhouse site i called my finds "Jessica's Karma" cause i dug my first large cent that day along with an IH and a Barber dime! Thanks for an awesome post Buckleboy and for reminding me how easy it is to be transported back in to the past with a find like this.
Jerry

Buck - those are truly outstanding finds my friend. The Flying Eagle cent is certainly a highly desirable coin but I'd be just as happy with the relics. The ring is one of those finds that undoubtedly gives you a hard case of "the thoughts" - you guys are truly deserving of making those types of finds - not just because of the countless hours of research and hard work you put into each hunt, but for the respect that you show each and every piece that you all "unearth". My hats off to you and the rest of the Brigade - truly masters of your craft... :icon_salut: :icon_thumleft:

Congrats on a great hunt, glad you got a flying eagle out of there hope you get a 56 next.

congrats on the hunt . people like you amaze me with the finds.
