Hey there,
Wondering if anyone knows if it would be safe to use my motorcycle battery trickle charger as the power source for electrolysis? It's a "Battery Tender Jr." and it's 12 volt, 0.75 amp http://www.pacificbattery.com/batterytender0123.html.
Does anyone have an opinion or am I barking up the wrong tree and should try something else?
Thanks!

For small stuff you cant beat a multi voltage power supply, they are under $10 at Radio Shack. Just hook it up and with the correct electrolyte, plug it in and turn it to the lowest power. Slowly, wait 1 minute per setting, turn it up one notch or level at a time. Watch for bubbles and crud to start coming off like a cloud. You want it just to do that. Barely. On the electrolyte I use Sodium carbonate. I find its much better than Sodium Bicarbonate, and costs the same heres how. Either find washing soda, which is Sodium carbonate, or take baking soda-sodium bicarbonate and put a cup of it on a big piece of aluminum foil and on a cookie sheet and bake it for at least 1 hour at 350 degrees. Turn it off and leave it in to cool. It changes it and it really does work better. I use 1 teaspoon per quart or 2 tablespoons per gallon. Use distilled water only, chlorine will cause problems.

No chlorine in my water... I'm well water, although I have a water softener... does that make a diff? And by washing powder, do you mean something like Borax?
So you'd recommend getting the multi-voltage one instead of using what I already have? I was hoping to give electrolysis a try before spending anything extra. Think I'd blow myself up? LOL!
As of now, I only have 2 cookie coins that I'm interested in dropping in the bath, but you never know what will come out of the ground next.
Thanks for the advice - I appreciate it.

Sodium carbonate is called washing soda, not washing powder. Different, but you can do the baking soda cooking thing and make your own. Yes, softened well water will work, or even water you let sit for a while to let the chlorine air off. You could try the battery charger, but it may eat up the coins. remember dont let the alligator clips get in the solution, use a stainless steel bolt or spoon for the adode -Positive -red clip, and the Neg gets clipped on the coin and just the very tip - if any of the clip on the coin goes in the solution. Check it for too much bubbling- looks like smoke coming off under water.

I am in the process of making one out of a extra computer power supply. I tried a power brick, ac -> dc converter and I blew it out. I think it was only 1 amp? It ran for a while, then died.... Here is were I am with the converted power supply:

and

There is a really good write up laptop battery

here is what I did... I found an old AC power supply its 18v 16 or 12 will work it'll just be slower... hook an alligator clip to each end... I put water lemon juice and salt in a small glass jar, mix well... stick a for/spoon in the water and red/positive clip the fork/spoon to the edge of the glass, then I attach the coin or what ever your wanting clean to the negative side of the wire make sure the won't touch each other. then plug it in and watch the show... that is as cheep as you get and it works pretty good.

Chukers...

I'll make a video of it next time I do it.

oh nickels will come out looking pink if you use this method
