One of our local farmers has just filled in a 5ft deep electrical power line trench across his oilseed rape field. Its a low priority field normally but its only 1 mile from a Roman Town & is next to other fields that produce quite well.
It was however the perfect opportunity this time of year to get a few digs, Dads second was part of a Lead Ampulla!
The runs were taking 1 hour before the turn around! - The longest we have done before.
After 3.5 hours we had:

Lead Cloth Seal
Medieval Leather Mount
Squashed Lead 17th C Powder Flask Lid
Jetton
2 Lead Tokens
4 Scrappies
& my best Roman Silver this year - Hadrian, AD133, Denarius!:headbang:

That makes up for a slow few hunts we had recently.:icon_thumright:

That's one sharp denarius, very attractive and nicely centered. Congrats!

Very Nice looking denarius for sure - You must be getting a decent collection of Silver Emperors by now .

Wow! Some day I'm going to have to pony up the money and head out that way!!! What a beautiful find! :icon_thumleft:

Superb detail on your unexpected silver. Great recovery!!

Wow that's a sharp one! That's it! I am going outside and digging up my mother-in-laws yard...

Congrats...you can tell by just looking that's it's the "next level" of old. Great snag during the off season too!

Steve

O.K,You got my attention with that fantastic hoard of ancient coins and buttons. That silver coin really has fine detail.Wish I could hunt over there.

CRUSADER THE GROUND RAIDER I SEE THAT YOUR OUT DIGGING AGAIN. FOR YOU HAVE SO MANY FINDS FROM PAST, SOON YOU WILL HAVE NO PLACE TO PUT THEM.

Nice! The legions of Rome were actively building Hadrian's Wall when that coin was struck!
So fascinating! :notworthy:

Very nice one! Good score this time of the year. A bit sad with the pilgrims ampulla, i like them a lot...still a good day out!

It never ceases to amaze me what you guys across the pond come up with . That's something I could only dream of finding

Thanks for all the nice comments.

I'm glad that this coin minted in Rome & transported to Britain for payment of the Soldiers got very little wear before loss.

I will never bore of finishing these.

Great hunt,love those Roman coins:thumbsup:

The silver Roman Denarius is a beautiful find Cru, the details are still so crisp! :occasion14:

Not too shabby for being 1,882 years old... congratulations to your Dad on the Lead Ampulla find too!

Dave

About 2 weeks ago I walked along the bottom of the trench looking for Archaeology. Along the whole route I only saw one shallow Roman ditch with the odd bit of animal bone & pot. This field was so low grade they didn't have to do any Archaeological digging, the desktop study must have drawn a blank. Which wasn't the case with a nearby water pipeline (some years back).
We had both kind of forgot about it, but Dad recently did one of his drive arounds & game on....

Great snag on the silver Cru, a very refreshing find for the off season. Too bad the ampulla had been hit it would of been a beauty.
