Update: email from William Leigh down the page.

I haven't been posting much, or detecting much, of late. Figured I'd post this past weeks finds. Managed this Cohannet Rifle Corps button. It was the last target of the day and a nice surprise. I've been hitting this place for three years and it still produces goodies. I can't find too much info on it aside from they were out of Taunton, MA and were formed in 1836. Got some georges/largies as well as some relics. I didn't scratch the quarter (I'm guessing it was the plow). Also found a "trime" which I seem to have lost and some buttons that are already put away.

Re: Pounded site gives up fantastic button+coppers/silvers UPDATE: WOW!

I just got this email from William Leigh:

Hello Dave, yes, finding a Cohannet Rifles button would be a "life event" .....I do not recall ever seeing one found! NOW, there is a button that looks almost identical to this button which is listed as MS26 in Albert's, Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons. It is from the same era, and the only readily discernable difference is that it says, "Massachusetts" in the ribbon below the shield device, rather than "Cohannet Rifles". This latter button, while a neat find, is no where near as rare!

Kind regards and congratulations,

William

It's tough to tell from the pics, but mine says Cohannet, not Massachusetts, in the Ribbon. Will try to post a better pic later so it's easier to see the lettering.

Told you I smelled BANNER...Sniff this vote

banner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is a nice button without a doubt. I am surprised William Leigh missed it in Alberts book. It appears to be listed as:

MS 86 Cohannet Rifle Corps, Taunton, 1-piece.
A. The State seal, COHANNET R.C. on stippled ribbon below Robinsons/Extra rm. Organized 1836 RV 25
Note: For interesting detail, see THE COHANNET RIFLE CORPS, by Leo J. Caron, National BUTTON BULLETIN, May 1949.

Tice's Dating Buttons book describes that backmark as:
"ROBINSONS/EXTRA" rm with each word in its own scroll
(listed as 1834-1848 date range, no exact start date)
