since i cannot go hunting here in the winter to much......
.......i thought i would post some fish hooks and some fish hook blanks that i thought maybe a few of the newer members have not seen
the blanks are the pieces with two drilled holes which would (with a little luck) yield two hooks each if they don't break......
....the reason for the two drilled holes is to form the inside of the jaw of the hook without breaking......
i think one of the blanks was broke (and re-glued by me) IMG_0017.jpg
also another frame of some bone things i thought you might like to look at which belong to the owner of the site that twitko and me care for

can't wait to get out and go hunting this spring (a few more months hopefully)

Glad to see many new members and....hey searcher123 i hope you are still looking at this site , if you are we say say hello to you

Thank you, gentlemen, for the welcome.

My limited time visiting TNet has been one "Wow," after another. Mr. Larson's hooks and bone artifacts have Wowed me to the bone.

Can you please inform me on the "warrior sticks"? What were they / used for.

Hello surf,
It's kinda funny I just read the book Bury my heart at Wounded Knee and part of it talked about the man in the picture Young Man Afraid of his Horse.

Thanks,

f you look at the two broke pieces above the stick you will see that they are the same thing
these sticks have staffs of feathers incised on one side like the one above and to the right of the bigger piece
now if you look closely at the longest piece you can see that a series of 'M' markings are incised......
.....please don't think that those markings stand for mandan as that is not the case all have the 'm' marks on one side and the staffs of feathers on the other side
maybe i can post some more images of those type when i locate them

used for painting, ....maybe quill flattening

Dosha Mr. Larson,

These pieces fascinate me. They are also completely out of my artifact hunting experience, so please pardon any "new guy" dumb questions or comments. In the interest of full dumbness disclosure, I've never found an Indian bone implement, nor been to North Dakota. Hell, I don't know if you are in Hidatsa, Mandan, or Dakota, Nakota territory. So let the dumb questions begin... ???

When you say "paint stick," are you talking paint, as in hide, or parfleche painting? Is there any evidence of "paint" or colorful minerals upon them?

Yesterday, I spent some time looking around on line. I didn't get far, using "paint stick" as a jumping off point. "Warrior stick" sent me to lacrosse land. I did find some interesting stuff, but my youngest daughter borrowed ye olde computer, and 86ed my searches. Today, I sit here with flu-like symptoms, so you may wanna disinfect your screen & keyboard. 8-) This is my 3rd attempt at writing back, cuz I disappeared my last 2 replies to you on account of ineptness on my part.

What, and when from, was the white man missionary presence in your area? Any chance the sticks are language related? Early "flash cards"? See, I told'ya I'd have dumb questions.

What about counting sticks? Game pieces, or chest piece decoration, or ornament?

Have you taken these by one of the "expert guys", in your neck of the woods for a 2nd opinion? Sorry for all the supposing on my part. Those are wonderful pieces. The face on the center piece is hauntingly beautiful.

Have you seen this unrelated legend? >> https://eee.uci.edu/clients/tcthorne/Socec15/lodgeboyandspringboy.htm
