since i cannot go hunting here in the winter to much......
.......i thought i would post some fish hooks and some fish hook blanks that i thought maybe a few of the newer members have not seen
the blanks are the pieces with two drilled holes which would (with a little luck) yield two hooks each if they don't break......
....the reason for the two drilled holes is to form the inside of the jaw of the hook without breaking......
i think one of the blanks was broke (and re-glued by me) IMG_0017.jpg
also another frame of some bone things i thought you might like to look at which belong to the owner of the site that twitko and me care for

can't wait to get out and go hunting this spring (a few more months hopefully)

Glad to see many new members and....hey searcher123 i hope you are still looking at this site , if you are we say say hello to you

Love the fish hooks Larson! Bone just doesn't survive in the soil here. Someday maybe I will get really lucky and find one.

yea they are cool, thanks for the look again never get tired of seeing them as i do not see them round here

Super Cool! Thanks for sharing, like them hooks. I the last photo, down in the center, is that one of those bone knives without the stone blades?

Steve that is so cool to see the fish hooks in its stages to see how they are made. I know you are partial to them being a big fisherman. I do not think they would land the big ones you catch. Did you and Twitko put together the frame for the owner or does he get out and hunt also? Nice frames :hello: Spring will be here before you know it. I am in metal detecting mode till we dry out some.

hey thanks
yup the owner john gets out a lot and has a big collection
those hooks actually caught big fish
they were left on the bottom with bait on them and the fish swallowed them.... then the next morning they were pulled in and used
the channel catfish provided 3 needles from each fish
these were from the dorsal spike and the left and right pectoral spikes

here are a few more examples of hook blanks made from round hollow bone......
.....the images of the flatter looking pieces in the first posts were rib bone blanks

if you look at the lower left side of the frame you will see three needles made from channel catfish pectoral and dorsal fin spikes
when i was a kid fishing on the missouri river i had this 3 lb cat i just caught and i fell and stuck one of them through my foot owee, owee, OWEEIMG_1692.jpgIMG_1691.jpgIMG_1690.jpgIMG_1689.jpgIMG_1067.jpg

hey thanks dennis my good montana friend
the piece you are refering to is a paint stick, john calls them 'warrior sticks'

You are the bone pro for sure Larson. You are welcome to post any time you like in my eyes. I love seeing all of your cool artifacts that you have found.
By the way do you have any hard stone artifacts you can post? Id like to see them from your area.

ok rocky thanks
yup we have a few celts and things made from hard stone (mostly green)

also if you look at my banner finds you will see a black hard stone grooved celt that john and i found

hey thanks dennis my good montana friend
the piece you are referring to is a paint stick, john calls them 'warrior sticks'

if you look at the two broke pieces above the stick you will see that they are the same thing
these sticks have staffs of feathers incised on one side like the one above and to the right of the bigger piece
now if you look closely at the longest piece you can see that a series of 'M' markings are incised......
.....please don't think that those markings stand for mandan as that is not the case all have the 'm' marks on one side and the staffs of feathers on the other side
maybe i can post some more images of those type when i locate them

here are two 'double' hooks along with a sketch of how the rib bone style blank was made...
.....and last a few more images of some of the paint sticks showing the engraved feather staff and the 'M' style markings

hope you enjoy

I love those and have always wanted to find one. Pretty sure I'd have a cardiac if I did, though.

Its those kinds of artifacts, that we can all relate to. Wow.. how things have changed. A pack of Eagle Claws from wally's vs. the time/effort it takes to do the samples you showed us. We are truely spoiled...lol. What great admiration I have for them...thanks so much for letting us see them.

Hello larson1951,

Thank you for posting these wonderful finds. This new member is very glad to see them. May I ask in what context most have been found, please?
