Posting for a friend - Buckle?

The two flanges positioned opposite from each other on the long sides of the oval indicate the object is a Colonial-era shoebuckle. The oval's size is also about right for that ID.

The flanges held the ends of the crosspin. In the photo below, the crosspin-holding flanges aren't as big, but they're clear enough to show you what I'm talking about.
