I'm on this side of the pond and a friend dug a 1300s silver at our site.

Kinda... there's one on this site but I have no idea where. It wasn't much to look at, both bent and holed, but you see day to day what we find on this side and 1300s is a crazy old silver. I knew as soon as I seen it, it was probably the oldest coin I had seen dug here. Come to think of it I've never seen an older silver posted from anywhere in North America.

Yep that counts it's obviously a very OLD coin carried as a touch piece, (hence the hole) by a early American settler. I missed that post so I am going to have a good look at it now, thanksIron Patch said:

Yes...judging by the whole in the coin(which I think in this case is the key) it could have been carried by anyone.Iron Patch said:Silver Searcher said:Yep that counts it's obviously a very OLD coin carried as a touch piece, (hence the hole) by a early American settler. It's actually tough to say because the site was early French, British, and Loyalist, though I think we can probably rule Loyalist out. It was in the "French field" and the older stuff was French, but the English site is under 100' feet away, and being an English coin you'd have to think it took a direct path and didn't pass through France, but you never know. If many early English hammered turn up there I guess it is possible.
PS... The early French here had cobs not French silver (the higher grade coins) so it is possible it was lost by the French. That's actually my gut feeling, lost by a Frenchie. (All our oldest coins were lost by the French)

This is my oldest Roman coin, it's a Bronze coin, but should be a Silver it's possible it could be a contemporary Silver dipped coin, but there are no remains of Silver platting so I don't know

The picture is very deceiving IP, the flash from the camera gives it that appearance, I did nick the sides ,defiantly Bronze.Iron Patch said:Silver Searcher said:

It does look like a layer of silver plate, but I wonder if a debased/lower grade silver could come out looking like that. If you think that is possible it would be easy to confirm, just nic a 1mm scratch in the edge to check the color. If it's plated it sure beat the odds!
