Oldest coin in America would be a Viking Coin !! :sign13:

Cause we were there first !!! :icon_thumleft:

Columbus go home !! :protest:
Well not really sure Vikings go way back but long long !! before the Vikings began there Sea journeys the Northern Chinese crossed the frozen Straights with there crude coinage starting in whats now Alaska and migrating South to whats now Mexico ,Stone sea anchors also dated back around a few 1000 years before any one hit the East Coast which kind of makes Columbus modern history in caparison the Viking where second :icon_pirat: Jim

Can anyone from the good old USA post a coin found here pre 1400. I wonder what the oldest coin in the USA was.

I'm on this side of the pond and a friend dug a 1300s silver at our site.

Kinda... there's one on this site but I have no idea where. It wasn't much to look at, both bent and holed, but you see day to day what we find on this side and 1300s is a crazy old silver. I knew as soon as I seen it, it was probably the oldest coin I had seen dug here. Come to think of it I've never seen an older silver posted from anywhere in North America.

Yep that counts  it's obviously a very OLD coin carried as a touch piece, (hence the hole) by a early American settler. I missed that post so I am going to have a good look at it now, thanks

It's actually tough to say because the site was early French, British, and Loyalist, though I think we can probably rule Loyalist out. It was in the "French field" and the older stuff was French, but the English site is under 100' feet away, and being an English coin you'd have to think it took a direct path and didn't pass through France, but you never know. If many early English hammered turn up there I guess it is possible.

PS... The early French here had cobs not French silver (the higher grade coins) so it is possible it was lost by the French. That's actually my gut feeling, lost by a Frenchie. (All our oldest coins were lost by the French)

Yes...judging by the whole in the coin(which I think in this case is the key) it could have been carried by anyone.

:coffee2:

This is my oldest Roman coin, it's a Bronze coin, but should be a Silver :icon_scratch: it's possible it could be a contemporary Silver dipped coin, but there are no remains of Silver platting so I don't know :dontknow:

Marc Antony... 83BC-30BC.....Legionary Denarius, Galley right? legionary Eagle between two standards. Found in the snow :)

It does look like a layer of silver plate, but I wonder if a debased/lower grade silver could come out looking like that. If you think that is possible it would be easy to confirm, just nic a 1mm scratch in the edge to check the color. If it's plated it sure beat the odds!

The picture is very deceiving IP, the flash from the camera gives it that appearance, I did nick the sides ,defiantly Bronze.

Well it's cool all the same being something it shouldn't. Counterfeiting has been around as long as coins so that's probably what it is.

This is the oldest silver I've found over here. There weren't a lot of the West Frisia's here, but the few that were here were in circulation back in the day, rather than being pocket pieces or mementos.

Silver Searcher, they were found in Germany about three years ago. The Celtic coin is silver washed and I did not know what it was for a long time.It was a nice surprise for sure.
