I think there was lead in pewter, I have found pewter buttons that had a high shine, it was of good quality, the Royal Scot buttons that came out of the camp in the Niagara area were of poor quality pewter, the buttons were falling apart, it depends on the soil. It's pewter, but is in such good condition is seems like lead!
