I hit a BRUTAL farmyard after work today. Wow it was bleak! I nabbed a few modern pennies and the tag with a 6 on it.

I had enough of that and headed home. I stopped at an old faithful spot and dug this really nice old button. I've been trying to determine exactly what it is. It does not have a shank, would have been attached with thread through the two small holes on the back. It's a two piece button, and there are no back marks. I've found several exactly the same online listed as Indian Wars era, and then I've also seen the possibility of being later repros made for veterans who were missing buttons. Also heard the possibility of military style fashion button.

As much as I'd like to think this is my first U.S. Indian Wars button, I really would like to be sure. Any button heads out there have an idea?

I'm not an expert, but I'd be shocked if that button wasn't from the 1800's. Most two piece buttons I find from the 1900's have a lot of guilt on them and the patina looks different compared to the pre-1900 buttons. Just my opinion...

The button was found where I'd expect finds from the 1800's, but then again I've found stuff from more recent times there as well. Thanks for the thoughts and comments.

That's a great button!!! I really like finding them oldies [emoji106]Congrats and HH

its post war. But probably early 1900s. Awesome find either way. :D

This button has been confusing TNetters for almost 10 years! I'm still guessing post Civil War, but before 1900...

Never seen a button stump Tnet in is this way before!

If we take the middle ground (opinions) it's 1870-1920, but that's still a large range.

Thanks villagenut. The comments by cannonballguy seem to suggest "military style fashion button" which I guess makes sense with the way the self shank is. Yet I have seen the very same button being sold as "authentic Indian Wars button, we don't sell reproductions". I guess anybody can claim anything, but that doesn't make it real lol. Still not sure exactly what to think.

I agree with post civil war, but who wore it? Soldier or civilian?

I'd be happy with that date range for my area, although I'd like to narrow it down. It's a very well made button, crazy that the maker didn't bother to put some info on the back.

I've seen this button stump people on other forums as well. Nobody can definitively say "this is your button, and here's the proof", although my gut tells me thecannonballguy is about a close as we're going to get.

With that back, 20th C fashion seems pretty likely, but you would think there would be plenty of proof of that.

Great looking button buddy, been following the thread not wanting post and detract from the Indian Wars theory. The back looks 20th century to me, but the front motif screams late 1800s. Either way it's a fascinating dig:thumbsup:

There's one theory left, its a late 19th C front with an early 20th C replacement back??

Thanks Jon. When I build my finds display case this winter I will place this button beside my Indian Wars hat badge. The button might not be authentic Indian Wars, but it's the closest button I've found so far.

I suppose that's a possibility, but wouldn't that be a lot of work just to fix a button?

I'm fairly certain it's a New York Militia button... that would put it pre WWI. The shank type is likely post Civil War. A good guess would be 1880-1900. It surely is a beautiful button! Congratulations!!

Not in those days, happen more than you would think.

Congrats JC. I like the mystery as much as the button!

Best of luck to you sir.

Congrats on pulling that sweet button JC. :occasion14: It's always nice to have and "Old Faithful" site to fill in some time. :icon_thumright:
