Just got a new permission at an old farm house. Found the usual mason jar lids and broken harmonica reed.
But then something unusual, a button with an old style eagle. Back says Waterbury. And (covilume)?

I believe this is what I found an 1880’s military button.
Example of a non dug button.

I’m no expert but looking at your button and the example above, the head of the eagle is different and the wing shape is different as well. Also the backmark is not a match. I believe your button is of the 1854 to 1875 variety. With a backmark used in the 1850s to 1865.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge can pin it down better. Congratulations on a nice find. Stay safe, good luck and keep swingin.

great save!

Congrats. To state the obvious, it’s an eagle button, but the back mark is interesting. Unless I am seeing things wrong in the picture I see “scovill mfgc” and Waterbury separated by a dot. Thought my eyes were playing tricks because thought it should have an “o” after the “c”. Looking through tice’s book, I did in deed find a match……and if I’m correct it gives you a very narrow range of dates.

Thanks for the information! I had almost no knowledge of buttons until I tried researching this button.
I am geeked to have found something from the Civil War (era). Too bad it was broken.

Just had a few min over lunch to look. Will try to find a pic of front (which may confirm if I’m right) later this afternoon.

I'd go back out there if you get a chance. If there's one there's likely to be more. I got on an old homesite several years ago and found a C.W. Union eagle cuff button. Since then I've dug three Confederate coat buttons there including the one pictured in my avatar. (My best Civil War button)

I just had the same answer from another web site. Plus it was believed to be a rare back.
And thanks greatly for your research.

Not a button man, but if the poster from the other site is correct, may be your find of the year. Agree with garebel, could/should be other good stuff there. Best of luck….and dig bigger holes going forward

Had some time to look further, and your button is not pictured in tice’s book (as best I can tell). The below pic shows the front, which looks close , and the unusual back mark. One request, if you do get a definitive answer…..please share. Gen 215 a 35 ….nice job.
