All reproductions are not new , Repro's can be slightly younger than the coppied item and also used over the years in the manner

of the item that they were coppied of. This one looked as if it was struck on the Bowl to split kindling or some thing and is still a

great find none the less, I hope that its a version that one may buy from a suttlers shop and used as a utility hawk/pipe.

I'm no expert on pipe tomahawks, but one would think a 'repro' would have all the bells an whistles. I'm guessing this one has good age to it and saw actual usage. It's awesome :sunny:

Most of the repros didn't have the heart cutouts, inlays, etc. Most were not made to fool unsuspecting buyers, some were. This one probably was used, but most likely this was made within the last hundred years or so and not a true furtrade item. I could be wrong, but feel 95 percent certain that this is one of those. Northwest trader can tell you for sure, just pm him. He has posts in the furtrade section if you need help finding him.

Ok Tired Iron, you've got me. Maybe I shouldn't have written most. The repros I'm referring to, though, are the older ones. Even many of the older repro's do have cutouts, I've got one I bought about 15 years ago. I'm not trying to step on anyones toes, I'm just trying to pass along some of the info I've gleaned while extensively researching these 'hawks. Hopefully I'm wrong. Have a nice day.

I wish I could drag you to a Gun Show in Denver with me this last weekend. A fellow I know has a framed case with 3-4 hawks in it that all (to me) look authentic. But then I don't sqwat about them. He's asking $1000 for the set. I wouldn't consider it with out someone like you taking a look. Its probably just as well I didn't pursue it. They'll be at the next show....I'll corner him and ask him what the story on them is.

The first thing you should look for if they were supposedly dug or surface finds is deep pitting. Three authentic pipehawks without hafts(handles) in a case could probably sell for what he is asking or more in the right market. The right makers marks, inlays' etc. could greatly affect the price in a positive way. If they have original hafts they would likely carry significant provenance to survive in that condition. These pipehawks sell for way more than what he is asking. So if they have hafts, I would be very wary. Send me a pic if you can, I'd love to see them. Hope this helps a little.

Arthur,
I think its a great looking piece.... I'd like to find something like that. I didn't mean to hijack your thread talking about axes with Scratch. Its great to see something like this and be able to "ax" a few questions. :laughing7:

Scratch
Just from what I can remember....they didn't looked pitted or had what I call forge marks. I just glanced at em' a few times....and thought....hmmmm one or two of them just looked really smooth. Arthur's to me looks more authentic......at a glance.
I know I'll get a chance to look at em' again up close. The fellow that has them is just the kind of guy that would have..."The real deal"....but he's also just the kind of guy that might try to push a "fake". He's pretty old (75-80's) and has chewed a lot of cactus buttons with the natives. I'll proceed with caution and try and maybe get some close pics. Thanks for your advice and info.
