Hey guys,

Dug this domed copper item a few month ago and didn't give it much thought. After finding 2 Spanish coins from the 1700s last month in the same area it donned on me that it might be a coin. It measures about 14mm in diameter and has a gold hew on the edges. Anyone seen a raised copper slug like this??

I also would like to see bigger and clearer pics.....if this was found in England I would say it 's a Celtic bronze coin, but I don't think that would fly as a South Carolina find. There are crude 1500s and 1600s Spanish coppers, but the small ones about the size of your piece (the 2 maravedis) are more flat and not thick and concave like yours. So I think an old button is also a definite possibility.

Civil war shrapnel put in a cannonball? They would put a bunch of small iron balls around that size in a cannonball, when it would explode the iron balls would fly and destroy enemy troops. You are in South Carolina where many battles were fought so there is a reasonable chance. It could be a ball bearing, or a number of other things, but it is NOT a coin, no coins, even ancient, were made of iron and circle. Corrosion ate away at the shape of the ball so it is misshapen. It could even be the top that broke off of a big screw.

Just my Thoughts,

Coinman, thanks for your thoughts but the composition is definitely copper. I see a faint cross on the front and a 3. The edges have a gold/brass hew.

In that case, I have no clue what it is lol. Good luck IDing it, hopefully someone will know soon.
