This was found in a barn . The house and attached barn were built 1799-1801 , Midcoast Maine . The original owners of the house were ship builders and sea men . I can't think of any other purpose for this thing . It's quite heavy and gaumy . I'm not sure what type of wood it is . There is some "wool" like stuff under the leather that's been tacked on to the part between the 'up' sticks .

Mojjax, that is very cool! I showed your post to my son and when he saw your pic, he said: "Dang, I thought those were just in the movies".

Is the wood part solid? If it's hollow, there may be a possibility that it could be hiding a coin or two :o

avast matey -- you have indeed found a ole swabbies "stump" leg --- arrrrr treat it with the respect it so richly deserves --- going to sea has often been frought with danger -- getting ones leg caught in in loop of line as the line tightened---known as being caught in the the "bight" of a line was a very common way to lose your leg in the old days.

Now thats real pirate treasure.now you need to find out what pirate lost the leg while he was haveing a roll in the hay with the farmers daughter.

Oh MAN!!!!!! You gotta get permission to hunt that place...I can just see you pulling up a treasure chest full of Golden Dubloons...Metal detect the barn and buildings too...the floor, the walls, the rafters...There has GOT to be hidden booty around there somewhere...

Only way to top that find would be to have found a treasure map in a hollow portion.... ;D
