This was found in a barn . The house and attached barn were built 1799-1801 , Midcoast Maine . The original owners of the house were ship builders and sea men . I can't think of any other purpose for this thing . It's quite heavy and gaumy . I'm not sure what type of wood it is . There is some "wool" like stuff under the leather that's been tacked on to the part between the 'up' sticks .

That's fantastic!! It sure looks like a peg-leg to me!?? I'd definitely hold onto that... that's a significant piece of history.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't. What a piece of history. Hope you can find some background on it.

Could be a seed planter for a one-legged farmer ;D

Peg leg for sure, at least the one that Mr. Crabs on Sponge Bob Square Pants wears looks like that.

Oh,man! I thought that was just in the movies! But my great uncle,Foster, was at Pearl Harbor on Dec.7,1941. He was on a ship and a shell or bomb fragment took a leg off below the knee. His leg looked real to me when I was about five years old. I was mighty impressed when he pinned his sock up with thumb tacks!........I tried it too......stuck a tack in my leg.....I was only five.....

Now all we need is the hook that went with the leg and presto, instant pirate!

Peg Leg she is.
