I found this in a small ravine that was a trash pit for a house. Ive seen civil war era confederate sword hangers that look a lot like this, but a little bit longer. Could this be a sword hanger or possibly some farming equipment? Sorry for image quality, still in the field. Was itching to find it what this might be. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Could be. I just haven't been able to find any sling clips that look like this.

Looks like it used to be one of those jew harps. Are both pix the same item ?

I’m no expert but I think more often than not these things are gag swivels not sword hangars.ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1586312512.108269.jpg

The first pic is the one I found. The second one is an image I found on a relic site that said it was a sword hanger. I'm starting to think that maybe this might be a swivel, but the loop is a little broken. Thanks for the replies!

Well, I looked at some gag swivels and there's one problem, there is a linear track or intention that runs along the inside of the loop, almost as if it had a spring mechanism to open and close one side of the loop.

'Older The Better' beat me to it... horse harness clip.

You'll see a similar example in the middle of these finds from a hunt in January.
