Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Dear all,

while detecting at the beaches here in Dubai, I came across this, what I believe might be an arrow head.

There are some interesting points here:
- The metal might be bronze (80+ on a Deus XP, Basic 2 program) - please help here!
- The sand on the beaches is imported from Saudi Arabia, as local sand is of too low quality
- The broad blade might indicate a hunting arrow, or a military arrow used against mounted troops
- Modern arrow heads are normally not made of bronze, but rather of iron or similar metals (right?)

Anyone has some info to contribute with? I will contact a local museum to (first) show them a picture of it,
to see if they have any clue.

Hi guys,

it seems this will be the find of my life... My first internet search, plus checking with various archeological sites on the net put this thing back to ca 1000 BC... That would make it almost 3000 years old!!! ****,my legs start to shake..The author "Petrie" (a source related to on NumisWiki), classifies this type as "A-Flat Bladed" type.

Have now contacted British Museum to see if they can help out. These kind of things just can't happen!!! On a beach in Dubai!!!!

Your find is very cool!! But these things are quite common to find in the middle east. They come up in plowed fields often, and around eroded city sites, and wash out of river beds and sides. They were used for hunting as well as military use, and spanned over a thousand years of use. These four are from my collection and did not cost much for their age. These are arrowhead sized, the spear points are larger. Congratulations on finding one with your detector!! If you were to hunt areas of the old Persian empire around old battle sites I am sure you could find many more since there aren't many people metal detecting there. Similar ones are found in Europe and north Africa as well, since the technology was spread rapidly through the world as it was known in the bronze age. I think if you research your area for old battle sites or cities you could do very well, there are many spear points, axe heads, and knives as well as bronze jewelry and ornaments from the bronze age in your area.

Awesome collection! Taken into account all conflicts and all hunts that have happened here over the millenniums, I guess they are quite common. Still, finding it yourself adds a lot to the feeling. The one on the right seems to match closely. Can you do any dating on those you have?

Yes, it is the thrill of the find. Most of us here in the USA wish we could hunt in your area, Europe, or Asia where history goes back thousands of years. Most metal objects here in North America are from the European "invasion" or newer so they are less than four hundred years old. I do not know how old the points I have are, it is very hard to tell about these things since the same materials and styles were used for literally two thousand years. They were originally found in the Mid East, but the guy I purchased them from had inherited them from his grandfather who had spent time in Egypt, Arabia, and Turkey after WW1, and he was unsure of exactly where his relative purchased them. These points could be as old as four thousand years, or as new as two thousand years. I hope you find more beautiful bronze age items to post here for all of us to see, it is a real treat!!
