Hey guy's thanks for the replies on previous posts. I believe I have found a few artifacts. 2 drilled wood items were found in a tree hollow I thought they were nothing but both have drilled holes at the top and have the same shape one looks worked. Card with a drilled hole with finger grooves. Metamorphic rock with a large hole drilled thought maybe a fire starter. possible plummet really grinded down to grain. Piece of pottery. Also eagle or bird like lizard. Thanks in advance for the look.

I think your pottery is actually crockery which is old but not native american old. I have to say I was the same way when I first started hunting artifacts. If you have nobody to show you why the items you posted arent artifacts as in somebody with experience in finding them it might take you a long time to understand why they are just natural formed rocks. My best tip is dont try to over think them I have no doubt you are a smart man. I have been doing it for 4 -5 years now and every once in a while a rock will still fool me so it takes a while to learn. If you donated to a museum and they havent put your items on display there might be a reason for that. Some people wont tell you the truth on what you have found they dont want to crush you. The people in these type of forums are trying to help you even though you dont see it that way...yet. If you continue to hunt for them one day you will know they were rite just like I have. Sit back and learn read some books go on some other sites and view do some study on the rocks in your area as to the hardness of stones. Limestone, sandstone form naturally in creeks in great shapes. They did use the 2 types of stones for artifacts at times but not often if they had quartz and flint. Good luck and maybe go to a artifact show if 1 comes close to your area and meet somebody who collects and finds so they can teach you. Thats what I did and it really helped me. Take care, rock

creekhunter look at these 3 items and explain to me how they are natural. Also I am not here to get help. I have experts that are doing that for me. Just wanted to show some stuff. I am not here to make enemies trying to have a civil debate. I was trying to make some friends who were interested in what I am interested in.

This is a California fire starting rock. pic did not show up on earlier post.

If your experts labeled that a fire starting rock, they need help too.

I would think an actual expert in identifying NA artifacts would/could come up with a better name for the material than "stone".

Who said that experts diagnosed this item. I also posted an identical pic of a authenticated fire stone rock that looks like this one from the state I live in. This is a metamorphic rock. You seem to show up to cause trouble.

I like you're style rock they are not on display and they are artifacts. The other things I brought in I was asked to take back home. They don't want rocks sitting on there desk. I am already the redheaded step child here. I can't dig myself out of this.I just posted an anchor and deleted it because right off the back it is not an artifact. I know it is an artifact and a very cool one at that but because the poster hasn't seen one like that it is a rock. I know it is an anchor its not designed to stop the boat it is designed to slow down the canoe in strong tides at trolling speed. Everybody I have showed knows it is an artifact It's okay though. You have been respectful and helpful as with Grim. Trust me you rub Grim the wrong way you are going to get some replies probably not nice ones and it's best to just stop posting. Also when I post obvious artifacts like the bone tool and the mortar with a fossil nobody replies.

Also that's cool that you can give me an opinion other then it's natural or a piece of asbestos or a glacier rolled over a piece of asbestos or water dripped on a metamorphic rock and made a hole in it. These kind of replies to me are not even worth my time here. I am sure if you were me you would understand

I didn't see the Bone Tool or the Mortar. Can you post them again please?

I have not had an opinion on either the mortar or the bone tool. And I know you know bone tools. It comes to a point at the front and the back of the bone looks rounded off nicely and matches others that I have seen. So I should of said I think it is a bone tool. Nobody replied to say it wasn't and I figure that would of happened by now.

Not set on it being a morter but where it was found It was found at a site and at the very least thought people would get a kick out of the fossil on the mortar. Also I am learning geology as per request of the learning curve about artifacts. This is a sandstone and there are not any sandstone crops nearby. I hope you enjoy the fossil of the scallop at the very least. mid to late Miocene geological area.

I make fire with a bow drill and have been doing it for over 20 years and have been collecting Native American Relics for over 50 years. Everyone picks up rocks that they think might have been Native Made. I have and have a nice driveway full of them. The piece with the hole is not a fire starting rock. If you held it in your hand and tried to use it to make fire, you would find that out in a hurry and your hand would have a friction burn that would not make you happy. Please take our advice and throw your ROCKS in the driveway and go hunt real relics.

I am open to it not being a fire starting rock. The rock is metamorphic and it is obvious that it is worked by man. Also found directly next to mortars along with the artifacts that I have showed that you believe are naturals. Thanks for you're opinion!

Jamus, this is what I see on your Bone piece and the Mortar. As you said, I have a pretty extensive collection of Bone artifacts from Awls, Fleshers, Needles, Hair Pins, Beads, Pendants, etc so I do know Bone Tools very well. Your Bone is the correct type to be used to make Trigger Bone Awls. It is the Leg Bone of a Deer. But, yours shows no evidence of being sharpened or polish from either making it or from use. Check out the photos of the Bone Tools pieces pictured here. You can see the obvious polish and sharpening on the Bone to make the Tool.

I truly believe your Mortar was formed naturally. If you look closely at these pictured below, and I apologize for the crappy pictures, you can see that these depressions were pecked into the stone while yours looks to have been formed by fracturing and likely from freezing and thawing or extreme heat.

What kind of leg bone? I have lots of bones as well as I collected bones to study paleontology.

Also we don't have freezing weather here and in the creek it's 70 degrees on a 100 degree day.

Jamus,

Keep your chin up. I discovered this forum years ago when I was just starting out and quickly got tired of the passive aggressive condescension thrown back at me. Then one day I realized that most of these people sit in front of their computer, making decrees that may be correct but delivering them with an unsettling amount of pleasure. I even found a hunting partner on this site.

The key is to not take it personally because it can become rather vexing. Granted I knew NOTHING and put some rocks on here that were so obviously not artifacts it is embarrassing!! Guys like Rock are fantastic resources and don't fear the Reaper. That guy knows his stuff unlike few others. Sometimes the desire to drive home an opinion can make you feel under siege and that sucks and I am sorry.

Me? I forgot this board existed for about seven years and came back after trying to learn how to best use the advice of some of these experts, because they truly are expert. I for tired of a the attitudes but as your knowledge base grows, so will your comfort level. Hang in there and try not to let the peanut gallery get you down. Happy hunting.

Jim

Like I said Jamus. 90% of the guys on here including me are really trying to help and when we see things that are suspect we do really look into it and check it out and let you know real or fake so youre not keeping every shiny rock or something that resembles something it isnt. Keep your head up man. Some people are very fast learners and once you get used to finding the good stuff then it's just second nature and you don't even have to guess it just comes natural
