Possible Dalton Hideout "Treasure Rock"!

I stumbled upon this place this past summer (2010) while exploring an area west of Tulsa, Oklahoma approximately 3 miles southeast of Sand Springs on the south side of the Arkansas River.

It was located on a creek runoff that spilled into the Arkansas River and went high into the cliffs above the river. I on the other hand found this run by hiking on the upper end of this runoff and after a little cutting with a hand saw, was able to reach the area by Jeep. When I first arrived under the shelf I immediately noticed cavings and the familiar "black soot" on the walls indicating there was a fire there long ago. I had already heard of tales of the James Gang hideout nearby that was buldozed under to make way for a Highway back in the 1950's. In fact, my quest was to entertain the fact that there was stll gold hidden up in the cliffs from Bank Robberies in the area that the locals had told me during the years I attended College in Tulsa during the 1990's.

Upon searching the surrounding area I soon noticed a strange rock at my feet lying in the creek bed. It had an elongated shape as if to indicate a direction at one time. It had the initials "RD" carved into it as well as an oddly shaped symbol down and to the right of the initials.

This rock is what I am most curious about. I have thouroughly photographed the location of the "Initialed Rock" and the surrounding area before removing it and bringing it home to Virginia.

That rock was in the shape of a finger pointing to a direction and the rock in the front supporting it confirmed it was very important to go in this direction.

I thought the same thing. The rock was in the shape of a pointing device. I thought that the symbol on the right was to indicate the direction it was pointing....to the left or towards the letters "RD". Now, I know that there would be no treasure left hidden anymore but I still believe that this rock at one time indicated a hidden cache.

Re: Possible Dalton Hideout "Treasure Rock"!

I would agree that it pointed to a treasure at one time... I have lived in the Tulsa area (Claremore) the last 4 years and have
been very intrigued by the amount of outlaw loot that has been found and or rumored in the area. I have reached the Dalton's and the area the rode in. Even went to Coffeyville to see their graves and where the shoot out took place. Very interested in KGC and any hideout areas. Thanks for sharing, just goes to show clues are still out there, even in the loot may not be. Next time your in the area, let me know, and maybe we can go th'ing to some back areas.

Hey Wldbil, just curious but have you came across anything connecting the Dalton's to the KGC? I haven't directy but read a statement that said someone believed he was but it hasn't been substantiated. I will definitely look you guys up when I get back in town. Wish I knew more people interested when I lived there! I usually made my hikes alone...

Lighting up an old thread, I know, but I have some additional (story-based, not documented) info not mentioned by anyone.

I live in Coffeyville, the site of their last hurrah. It is said that the night before (Oct 4th 1892) their attempt to rob the banks in Coffeyville, the Gang camped in a thicket near where Onion Creek joins the Verdigris River, about a mile south of the KS-OK border (2 miles east of present-day South Coffeyville, OK). The legend tells that they were still in possession of a good portion of the loot from the train robberies in Adair and Red Rock ($10-15 thousand), so the money was buried at the campsite, with plans that if they got split up during or after the bank job, they would rendezvous back at the site, dig up the loot and skedaddle. Well the job didn't go so well, and Emmett was the only survivor and spent the next 15 years in Lansing Prison. No one ever came back to Onion Creek...

Three days after his release from Lansing Prison in Kansas in 1907, Emmett Dalton showed up in the Sand Springs area. The story goes on to say there was a "walnut grove" near the caves discussed in the previous posts above, and a small house or cabin nearby said to have been used by the Dalton Gang 15 years before. Emmett stayed in the Sand Spings area only a few days and went on to Tulsa. Soon after he left, near the building, three freshly-dug holes were found, one had the definite impression of a pot or dutch oven in the bottom. Emmett spent the rest of his (and Cole Younger's) life telling the public that "crime does not pay" - yes, HE came up with that phrase - but did he cash in on his?

Lived in Stillwater, Ok. for years. The Daltons hung out in Ingalls about 10 miles east of there. It's been detected maybe a thousand times, I never found anything. Anyway I have not heard of them being around Sand Springs, which is another 50 miles east of Ingalls. Who can say?

After his capture, Emmett maintained that the gang had no "hidden loot". One of the reasons they attempted the Coffeyville robbery was because they were running low on cash...between the 5 outlaws, they had a total of $900. The three Dalton brothers wanted one more job to finance a trip to South America.

Wow, I haven't checked in on this thread in quite a few years! Really sad to hear Monty has passed on. It was great sharing memories with him about his childhood. Thanks everyone for dropping some updated for on this thread about the Daltons! I am now living in Sunny Southern California in Palmdale, CA working for Lockheed Martin and hope to continue my research and Adventures recovering and preserving artifacts on land and in the water!

Just stumbled upon this thread. Great piece and even more interesting since the local added such interesting information my neighbor , had grown up in the area. And told stories of a cave he found with a wagon in it when he was a child. He has since passed away. But I think I posted a post long ago about the town. Will have to wait fora stormy day to look back in my past posts. I believe he was talking about the same town.
