Possible Civil War plate?

I went metal detecting today at a old home site that is now an open field. My second target at this site, I pulled out this plate with "US" on it. It looks a lot like those Civil War buckles. My mouth dropped down to the ground when I noticed the US on it! It is pretty messy on the back. Does anybody know what this could be? Some other notable finds for today was a 1939 wheat cent, a heavy broken padlock and a piece to a toy revolver.

Lucky! One of the properties I hunt has tales of the landowners as children pulling them (the bridal rosettes) up out of the plowed fields. Been hunting for one!
