I could use some ideas as to what this thing is. The "Porter Cable" cast insignia is the only marking. No numbers or letters anywhere. It stands about 24" tall, but can go up to 30" tall.

As it's lying in the dry dirt and grass at a moving sale, I'm looking at it for what it was and maybe, "What it can Become."

I liked it because it's heavy and has mounting holes so it can be mounted down solidly. The counter-balanced crank raises the whole column about 8"-10". The top lever allows the full barrel to be revolved 360 degrees and indexes with the side pin at three positions. Inside the hollow cast iron barrel are dual shiny harden "roller skate" rollers on the bottom and two more on top at each end allowing something to slide through the cast iron barrel with little effort.

My idea was to use it as a multi-directional base for specialize wood carving..... One could get a solid brass/steel 2" O.D. shaft that can be put into the hole and the side thumb-screw locks that shaft from moving in or out and from rotating. An 18" shaft can be moved any length, rotated 360 degrees around, and left hanging out to get to something close in to the round barrel. Because it weighs about 60 lbs., it has plenty of solid mass and a wood carving vise/base-plate could be attached and handle any amount of impact chiseling.....

How would you use it?

Do you have an idea as to what it was originally made to do?

Thanks for your help and time,

Bill

BINGO!!! :hello2::hello2:

Boy, does that make sense!! In the '70's, I taught woodworking for 10 years and never "Saw" a radial arm saw like the one you found!! What year do you think it was made?

It all falls into place, now!:tongue3:

Thanks so much,
Bill

Well, that's certainly cool, looks a lot more durable than the Porter Cable tools I use, except maybe for my bench top planer. I've been wanting a radial arm saw for a while now, and I think I might hold out til I find a nice old one like that
