Can you explain your cleaning process in detail? I have some aluminum jelly ready to use on some buttons.

If you read the instructions on the aluminum jelly container it explains what to do.
It only works if the artifact has gild on it. I use a QTIP to apply it then let it soak for a few minutes the work it a bit with the qtip then rinse it off with water with a drop of soap the repeat the process until your happy. This button came out great because there was so much gold gild left, they don't all come out as nice if the gild was worn off and not so thick.
As I mentioned aluminum jelly works on things with gild on them

That cleaned up very nice. Any idea on how old?

I'm thinking mid to late 1800's because its a classic two piece button common during the Civil War buttons.

Thx. Yeah I read 5 minutes on the bottle but I'm always tentative to go too long. I have some buttons that I think will clean up really nice.

Me too, I think my AVC Button will clean up better...I just worry that I'll go too far!................HH

Here's a before and after of my Argentinian train worker's button... aluminum jelly worked great! I did three 5-minute treatments.

I tried on a different type of button (no gild) and it did nothing. But I have other buttons that I think this will work well on!

Hey Grant! That looks amazing! I'm glad it worked out for you brother  Looking forward to trying it out myself this weekend.

And a big THANK YOU to Erik for the aluminum jelly. I'll post pics of the other buttons I clean up.

Hey Grant, be sure to listen to Garabaldi and be sure to only hit the gilded part of the buttons with the aluminum jelly. When you get to the back of a two piece button, the shank is usually not gilded. I got a little sloppy on the shank one time and when I overlapped the gilding. Not a good result. I won't make that mistake again.

That really makes a difference! What a beauty

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to try another button today and will be more careful. Will read buckleboy's tips too.
