I actually found this stuck into a tree in the field I was in today. I noticed the branch was broken and went around the other side and saw it sticking out the main trunk about 4 feet up off the ground. The thicker end was in the tree trunk, was difficult to pull out but I was intrigued, still am.

And this is the tree, in the middle of the trunk is the hole that it came out of. I had to dig it out with a knife. Nothing else left in the trunk.

Was it a sugar maple? It may be a syrup tap.

Excalibur, oh wait that was in stone.:tongue3:It looks like the tang of a file or a knife.

I too often find items hammered into older trees, such as clothes line hardware, hooks for hammocks and miscellaneous iron for hanging stuff to be repaired.
Once I even found a lead pistol round-ball in the base of an old pine tree.
I have to agree with Steve, your find looks to be something industrial, possibly plow hardware or a tool. :icon_scratch:

Here's a piece of iron I found hammered into an 80 year old tree this past summer... I left it where it was, I feel it's part of the properties history.

Looks like a tool of some sort, maybe 25 years old or so. That's not a very old tree.

I believe what you have there is a very old knife, and the handle
is missing. The small end is the tang, and the handle would go
there.

Almost looks like a dagger shape.
