The cartridge appears to be a .22 short. I know the U.S. gov't used Mossberg rifles for training that could fire the .22 short, long and long rifle with magazine mods. I've never given it any thought but maybe the ammo they used was headstamped US.

About 3/4 of the way down. It appears to play in a range from 1905 to 1915.

The United State Cartridge Company was incorporated in 1868 in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Although U.S. Cartridge never attained the stature of Peters or Union Metallic Cartridge, it suffered a similar fate. The National Lead Company purchased half interest in the U.S. Cartridge Company in 1910 and the remaining half from the Butler family in 1919. National Lead became a subsidiary of Winchester in 1926, but Winchester-Western apparently did not take full control of U.S. Cartridge until the mid-1930s.

I believe you're correct. I also think I'm wrong on the 22 short. I pulled a 22 short out of my safe and compared it to a cent. The sizes don't match like they do in the photo. Maybe it's a 32?
