the key to this is going to be to figure out what the metal tab sticking out is. I cant find any early gun with that gap or tab in it.
looks like an old rolling block single shot, pre 1900

I'm a gun nut and can't recall seeing any rolling block pistols. The Stevens early 1900's .22's among other offerings, had a lever that dropped the block down to load a shell, they were called falling blocks. This looks like it had a gate that swung out of the way to load it, The gap in the front bottom of hammer is a puzzle to me.

I've seen one that you used to catch the rim of the case. Then when it was fired you flipped it to the side to let it drop out of the gun. That was on a "rimless" case like a .45 ACP though. I'd like to see a top and bottom view of the gun to see just what that is sticking out. The trigger could be missing and that hangey down thing could be a rod to push the fired case out? Monty

In that era, treasure seekers were a community unto themselves - and they came and went where the gold was to be found, be it USA, OZ, or Aotearoa.

Same as the whalers and sealers.
