Hey guys, i was goin thru pocket change today that i had in a water bottle and i found this 1959 penny. It felt odd in my hand so i turned it around and there is not a reverse to it!!! It looks like it just fell off. The edge is still around it but the middle is missing!!! WTF I just listed it on ebay and already i have bids, lol This must be a real odd error. Let me know guys, Thanks Greg

definately does not look like an Error

Doesn't look like an error to me either. Can you get an accurate weight? Should be 3.11 Grams, if its significantly off from that then it most surely a post Mint damaged coin.

probably a magic trick coin, but I find it interesting that in the pic of the reverse you can see part of the memorial as well as the outline of Lincoln's head

1.6 grams according to my "Not for drug use" scale lol not sure if that really helps, but you can see the obverse as well. Which that baffles me the most!!!

I have noooooooooo clue wut this coin could be, a dime does not fit in, you can see the impresseion of the back but it looks like it just fell off. GRRRR lol

Yes, this is actually a true mint error. This is a SPLIT PLANCHET error. Somewhere out there is the reverse side. This is a MAJOR lamination error where the coin split into 2 pieces after the strike. NICE FIND!!!

You can see the ghostly image of Lincoln in the side that looks like "wood grain". You would not see this effect on those "magic trick" coins.

Weird it was found in pocket change. This could have been taken out of someone's collection and spent on accident. Maybe whoever owned it passed away and their family didn't realize it was saved out for a reason and they spent it . . . . . maybe? Hard to say, but this is a major error on a coin dated 1959 . . . . it's in very good shape . . . . these errors don't circulate much because they get noticed pretty fast!

This is NOT an error that you will find in a post 1982 zinc cent.

Don't just take my word for it . . . ask the world's leading expert on error coins ~ he'll tell you about it ~ [email protected]

Thanks soooooooo much!!! I just email him to find out about it. Someone on ebay offered me 25 bucks as soon as i listed it but im not so sure that would be a high enough price, lol Im greedy!!!

Yeah . . . . just let the auction run it's course. There's no set prices on error coins like there is on "regular" collector coins. Let the bidders make the price.

I learned that back in the late 1990's when I first got on eBay. My eBay name is ODDCOINS . . . . 99% of my eBay auctions are for error coins. eBay is great for the items that you aren't sure what they are worth . . . as long as you've listed it in the correct category, have decent pic's, and have a good honest drescription ~ it will sell for what it's worth! But sometimes the market goes up and down . . . . right now the error coin market isn't so hot. But you'll do just fine for a piece you found in your pocket change!

interesting find!

I hope it does turn out to be a split planchet, would be a very cool find. I wouldn't think it was one due to the edge coming up the way it does.

However, I would consider Mr. Weinberg's word as good as gold. I've had the honor and good fortune of his answering questions for me in the past. :icon_thumright:

Hello Greg, the other post was correct in saying let the auction go the distance. I just viewed your auction, and you really should revise the title. You have 55 characters and you should use them all. Add some "Key words" like SPLIT PLANCHET - Rare - HTF - Mint Error. These key words will get you many more views.
Good luck.
Ebay Top rated seller.

I disagree with the split planchet. It looks like a raised rim around it with the center hollowed out, a split planchet would not have this. I'll go with the novelty coin that has been altered.

Here is the ebay number for the coin [mod]:evil5:[/mod] Feel free to stop bye and check it out Thanks Greg

[mod]Sorry Had to Remove Number.
This would be a Terms Violation.
Charter Members only can Post their EBay sales [/mod]
