Because I spent 4 hours today, hunting the yard of a home built in 1900, and only pulled 3 Wheats and the parts to 3 different Cap Guns. The Wheats were 1920, 38 and 49. The Cap Guns came out of the ground in pieces, but I was able to fit them together on the appropriate guns. I was really hoping for some old silver or tokens from this yard. The home has been in the family for the last 70 years, and they said no one has ever searched the yard before. It even had an empty lot next to it, that was part of the same yard. Oh well, glad I woke up from my bad dream ! Guess I'll settle for the Wheats and Cap Guns.

I attribute this phenomenon to the fact silver coins are shiny. therefore when dropped they were easily seen and immediately recovered.
the pennies being copper or brown in color blend in well with the ground and were left for us to find.

True but to a small extent. Otherwise how would you explain all the silver coins that have been lost, then recovered over the years?

sort grass = easy to see, long grass not so easy . knowing it was dropped / not knowing makes a difference too. those who were poor would paw at the ground if they knew they dropped the money out of their pocket . rich guy maybe not. these are just thought's , every hunt is different.

Still some nice finds! :occasion14:

Recently it happen to me; I hunted a 1720's home and found only one early 1800 copper and no silver. :dontknow:

Donโ€™t forget, a so-so day of detecting is better than ANY day at work! Head back to that property and try again.

I had a chance to check a 100 year old place and found wheats from the teens and an 1899 barber quarter. Think I need to go back and work it with no discrimination to find those buffaloes!

Here in Florida people have been re sodding their lawns for 100 years so there could be 10" of sod over the org. lawn. I always detect with zero discrim and wear headphones for the weak sounds. I hunted a school in S. Fl that everyone said was hunted out and found 34 silver coins from 1885 to 1921. The sounds were very weak and the coins down 10" - 12" but a faint sound led me to them. If all you dig are good strong signals most likely all you will find are modern coins.

Cap guns rank among my favorite finds! Vey cool! Looks like you had a great dream to me!

Hey, that happens to all of us who have spent any time detecting. Some people just didn't have much money.

I believe that sometimes the people living at an old home site just didn't have anything to loose. They were just that poor.
