they appear to have been made with a hot iron! ::)

I was just going to say that, very symmetrical not done free hand.
The bar of a chainsaw is long and narrow. ;-)

That's rubber trees they slice. I drill a 3/8" hole and tap a spile (metal tube) in my maples to draw sap and hang the bucket from. And sugar maple bark peels from the sides (not to be confused with red maple that peels from the ends). That's not a sugar maple. Sourgum maybe?

3 x's of course mean it is an x-rated tree. Did it also happen to have a knot hole in it? ;D

I have this mental image of Ernie Keebler being led off in handcuffs on the 6:00 News with his hoodie pulled over his head.

Question:
Are you in the U.S.?
If not, they might be marking something dangerous. Sometimes, "militaries" would mark places they had put traps or land mines. Not here in the US though.

Pfew, you scared me thar for a second.

so far i have found at least 10 decent sized hoot owl or mysteriously shaped trees. they are pointing in several different directions. will try and detect asap.

In my opinion these marks were made with a hot iron and not with a chain saw.
Now thinK : who would take so much care in marking a tree in such an special way?
Anyway, the marks seem to be not so old (let's say a couple years perhaps).
It could be some holy place for a secret sect or cult.
If I were you I would'nt detect and not dig in that place.
Better stay away and never return to that place,if you know what I mean... ::)

If you can show me a close up of an area of the cross. Maybe fill the frame with 1-2" of the scar, I should be able to tell you how it was made and how long ago.

Here's a little history in Arkansas.

Marked Tree

Founded in the 1880's, the city of Marked Tree is located in Poinsett County approximately 33 miles southeast of Jonesboro. Originally called Edwards when the railroad was being built through the area, the name was changed to Marked Tree by early settlers. Two stories exist on how the name was created. One is based on speculation that Native Americans marked the tree to help them safely remove their canoes from the St. Francis River. The other is that the marking was made by outlaw gangs from the 1830's to help locate their hideout. The "marked tree" was washed away during a flood in 1890. As of the 2000 census, Marked Tree had a population of 2,800 residents.

Perhaps the X marks were once alot smaller and grew larger as tree grew. This might be a clue as to how old they are or when they were made.Or mabey Zorro came thru after a few too many shooters.LOL

I'm thinking that I had read somewhere that once you marked up a tree, that the marking remained the same size irregardless of the tree growth. ??

I don't know what kind of tree this is,but it seems the
kind that looses its bark. Therefore I think the marks
are not so old. ???
I am no expert in nature,so let's wait for Bio Professor's
conclusion after he watches some close up pics....

I'll wait for some closeups before I say too much. The "Xs" won't change in their height on the tree. Trees grow taller from the tips of the branches. The trunk does grow larger as the tree grows. That's why the bark "cracks" on some trees. Any cuts into the tree that cut through the thin layer of cells between the bark and the wood will die. That thin (2-3 cells max) layer of cells (Vascular Cambium) is the ONLY part of the tree - except the leaves and buds - that is alive. That's why you can kill a tree by "girdling" it. As the trunk gets bigger, the cut will get wider if the tree can generate some scar tissue. It will look different from the bark.

Pictures will really help nail this down.

will get some real close ups tommorow. thanks for all the help

Never mind the tree. No one marks up a tree because it is special. They mark up a tree because it is in a special location or near something special. Though the bee tree idea has a lot of merit. Traditionally they were marked and the finder went and located the land owner and they split 50/50. Any big holes or openings further up the trunk 10 to 20 feet from the base? Perhaps a logger marked it that way because it has a metal spike, fence or other hard object that would endanger the saw or saw mill workers.

Take some shots with your back to the tree and facing away at the four cardinal compass points. Lets maybe see WHY it may have been scarred up.

Nothing higher than 15 foot on tree because it has been blown off by a tornader a long time ago. no logging in area until last winter. that is how i stumbled across it, cutting firewood out of the tops that were left. will have some pics later today. just curious as to why the bottom legson the x in the pic with 2 x's has a long leg and a short leg. could the long leg be a directional pointer?

its the same x in the third pic down. notice the difference? the other two have legs that are the same length.

Looking more like a bee tree as Knuggethead suggested. It was hollow before the top came down.
