I was walking through the woods today when i stumbled on this tree. It has 3 giant X's carved into it. havent detected area yet, but was wondering if maybe they were pointers. any input would be greatly appreciated. here's some pics.

Hard to say, could have been somebody goofing off although it seems a bit of overkill for goofing off. We used to carve allot of stuff onto trees but cant think of any reason for 3 big X's unless maybe somebody wanted to be able to find that exact spot again. I would definitely run the detector from the tree out at least 20 feet.

Perhaps the X marks were once alot smaller and grew larger as tree grew. This might be a clue as to how old they are or when they were made.Or mabey Zorro came thru after a few too many shooters.LOL

Question:
Are you in the U.S.?
If not, they might be marking something dangerous. Sometimes, "militaries" would mark places they had put traps or land mines. Not here in the US though.

Boundry marker, probably at a corner of the property.

Or direction marker for the trail to the still. (As in moonshine: "XXX")

Appears to be the ancient Algonquin ritual known as Tic Tac Toe.

Maybe the tree was set to be cut down, and they didn't have any spray paint to make an X, so they made 3 X's in hopes of being able to find the tree again, and they got lost. I don't know, just being funny.

thanks for the input. i am located in northern arkansas. i believe that this area has been wooded for a long time. and this tree is deep in the woods. within about a 150yard radius from this tree, so far i have found at least 10 decent sized hoot owl or mysteriously shaped trees. they are pointing in several different directions. will try and detect asap.

Ahoy, matey! "X" marks the spot! ;D ;D A good place to dig it'll be! Did your treasure map lead you to the x ??? Just kidding! ;D I would definitely hunt that area good no matter what the reason for the X's.
Good Luck,
Ed

Don't you make an "x" or a "v" in a tree when collecting sap for maple sugar? So the sap flows down into your spout and collection bucket?
