I have found these in different sizes at early homesites and would like to know what they are. "This piece must be a real stumper" The doll toilet seat reply took allot of imagination but I guess it's a good as any so far LOL. Maybe some one will recognize it!!

Most of the replies have been in what I would call "Possible" category, but nothing really convincing. Does anyone know of a individual or site I can contact for a definite ID????

Just trying to stear you in a direction, or help someone else jump start their memory and tell you what it is...

Old iron trash like that coulda' been used for damned near anything.

I know I would have used it to hold down my paper garbage in the trash can. ;)

MJ, how clever of you to so diplomatically express your true feelings about his object. LOL that was some slick wording!

It's not always easy to ID old stuff these days because the technology has changed so dramatically. What this thing was used for originally may be so obsolete that it defies our imagination. You know, something like the tools used in making buggy whips. We need a time machine so we can travel back and take a look around. Until that happens, many things will remain mysteries I'm afraid.

True 'nuff. I remember similar clamps being used to route overhead piping in a foundry I worked at, but they had a hinged center so they could be added in the middle of pipe runs. The feet fit in a grooved channel. 90% similar, but different enough it wasn't worth posting.

I've seen Babbett bearing retainers that look similar . . . but not identical

Who knows what each internal part for something like this may look like?

And there are thousands of such pieces of equipment, with hundreds of pieces, broken and scatterred over hundreds of years, that end up in the soil. I can go into the "glory boxes" I keep in my cellar for things that might come in handy that I have no idea where they originally came from or what purpose they originally served.

It's a pipe guide. ???

Here's a modern one.
Actually you might be (& probably are) right as some one else mentioned along the same line. This could also answer for the differn't sizes. The size and shape seem to make the pipe support idea understandable and probable. "Thanks" for your professional reply instead of a SMART one.

Hello Dugfinds; actually I do have a sense of humor and enjoy the forum greatly. I do also enjoy some of the comical replies given but I though I was detecting a touch of arrogance in MJs reply. Replies like his could discourage others from posting their finds of question. Best Regards, Rob

You apparently don't know MJ if you think he was being arrogant. He is not arrogant and in fact he IDs many of the Whats Its on this forum. Sometimes all you have is a piece of junk - period. No harm no foul. Some guys never do get an ID. Lighten up please.

As we all know, its hard to write things without a hundred or more different interpretations being taken by the same sentence. Hopefully your not put off & you can enjoy giving your opinion too. From your oversea's jester, dugfinds.

Thanks TT...

Rob, I am truthfully not smart enough to be arrogant at all...

I should however be more careful about wording responses... :P

NEW HERE, THIS LOOKS LIKE A FASTENER TO SECURE BED RAILS TO THE HEADBOARD AND FOOTBOARD. THE ROUND END IS ATTACHED TO THE RAIL AND THE OTHER END SLIPS INTO THE HEADBOARD.

Cemmons, welcome to the forum. Nice to have you aboard. Maybe something to do with bed rails and headboards, but apparently these things have been found by other TNetters in various sizes.

I looked at the other photos on the previous thread and did not see any holes on the "feet" of the items, so I don't know how it could be attached to a floor joist or wall or whatever IF it were a pipe guide. Unless there was a track installed first and the "feet" slid into the track. Seems unlikely to me.

It's cast iron, right? What was cast iron used for? Frying pans and kettles, horse & wagon tack, pipes, stoves (cook & heat) and iron trivets. Yeah, dugFinds, I don't know. LOL

Just a stab at it, but maybe it might be like somewhat of what we have now,,,,pegboard hooks. But used around or in a cast iron stove, where different heights were needed for hanging racks/hot irons..ect. I did some looking into the older cast iron stoves around the 1900's era but didnt see anything like this. But it could of also been used by blacksmiths for hanging various tools/pieces being made......like I said just a stab.

I did like the dollhouse toilet seat :D
