This link (second photo on page)...shows the coin...but not with COIN SILVER SAMPLE on it...the actual coin as shown on your photo without those other characters....http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinText/Sp-milled.3.html<<<this is the real thing...yours is not....sorry!

Never saw a coin like that. Most sites I looked up are in Russian or Chinese and I can't read them LOL....

I found a few other coins with COIN SILVER SAMPLE CIRCULATION NO on them...but different pics on them...

Waiting to see what others can find...neat find!

You have a Mexico Portrait 8 reales minted under Spanish Rule at the Mexico City Mint.

The assayer was "F.M". The Portrait is that of Charles III of Spain. Value depends on condition (grade): Range: $50 - $450.

Looks fake to me. I'm no expert though. Someone on the forum will know for sure.

It is definitely NOT an original piece of eight. Could be a silver round or some kind of fantasy piece. Also definitely produced on more modern minting equipment. Looks very 20th century to me. Hope that helps.

It's not a "FAKE" as it has the word "Sample" on it so it was not intended to decieve or fool anyone.
It's a Reproduction Coin.

I will take time later and do a search to see what I can find out and post back if no one else comes up with anything before that.

Actually one of the defintions of fake is to simulate which means to create a likeness or model of.

I would agree with Teddy. It is a sample and clearly stated at that. So it is an original copy of a silver coin. If you are asking if it is a real coin or not then no it is not a real coin. Does it have monitary value then yes to someone it is worth money and if it is made from real silver then it has a spot price value. No matter what it is still a neat find and very interesting.

Congrats

"counterfeit" from "reproduction".

A "Reproduction" is a replica of a coin created to be similar to the genuine article, but is not intended to represent itself as a genuine coin. A number of artists create reproductions of coins for a variety of reasons. A very popular coin may be out of the reach of the average collector's budget, so they may instead choose to buy one of these reproductions, which are available at a small fraction of the cost of the real article.

A "Counterfeit" is a replica intended to fool collectors into thinking that they are buying a genuine coin. They are struck with the intent to defraud.

it is a clearly marked "reproduction" of a spanish coin 8 real coin --- so no its not an "original coin / real coin" -- but "real" originals are quite costly -- so they make copies for folks to buy -- since they are clearly maked "not for circulation" -- their not "fakes" in the normal meaning ---since their not trying to fool you into thinking its a "real" coin --- but rather a clearly marked copy.

Thanks for all your inputs, especially SWR' s comments and detailed job to help us to understand this coin!!!

Conclusion, I think it is a "Part of a commemorative coin set from China"

Enjoy a nice weekend! SWR!

I like the "sample die strike" theory as well.

I knew what you meant myself. ;) :)

:) :)So, it is a "reproduction" coin with "commemorative" purpose, without intention to fool people that it is a genuine one, because it declares "sample" and "No circulation".

This is a collection of my grandpa, he got this from one of his Chinese friend. If you blow on its edge, you will hear silver whistles...... 8)

Thanks, ALL!
