Well, since I do little but hang on post out here in the field, I've got plenty of time to think about things.
If I was was looking for that ring, I'd do two things first. #1 go to the front door, turn around and look for the most used paths. Sure you may have a side walk, but what else is out front that you may make frequent trips to? Like the driveway/garage, the mail box, a flower bed.
Then #2, the back door. You can have the laundry line, some out buildings, don't forget the outhouse.
Folks are creatures of habit, normally will take the shortest route to something. And those paths are more then likely where they lost something.
Also with a ring, they just don't fall off, you have to be doing something with your hands when it happens. Washing dishes, digging in the garden, doing laundry, working on the car. Hopefully not when using the outhouse.
