Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to convince people to profit from anyone else's suffering, but any detectorists in the Louisiana area might want to be on the look out in and around the New Orleans area.? Just read where, while they're currently pumping out all the water that flooded the area, city officials expect that most of the roads in the area will have to be razed and relaid becasue of the health risk associated with the polluted water that's been covering them for the last week.? Now, I imagine thay may have to block off any areas they're doing this to, there might be a chance for someone to get into areas that have been covered in asphalt for who knows how long.? Just a thought.? Happy Hunting!

True...and im sure once this is over and things start to settle down and people can move back in they will need help finding valubles that have floated out of there homes.

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way

Great point, Jake. I didn't even think about that. With everyone offering help out there, I wonder if any TH'ers in the area could offer services along those lines? I'm sure there's stuff lying all over the place from homes that were destroyed before the owners could remove all of their belongings. Maybe we could start a new forum once all the dust has settled for those types of finds?

I was Just Thinking About Detecting Possabilities A little Bit Ago When They Showed The Streets On the MISSISSIPPI Coast, Covered in SEA MUD.

I wonder How Many Gold & Silver Coins Blew Up on Shore With The MUD.

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

Yet another good question. :o Possiblities abound.

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

I have to say that I was kind of thinking similar stuff as what is being mentioned here. Like the issue of people going out and needing someone with a detector to find some valuables... However, looking at the flood waters that hit so much of the area. I would be afraid that most people will not find anything. At least not their stuff. Something lost from someones house would, quite possibly, be miles away by now, being washed around in all the flood waters. The thought this afternoon, came to mind as I watched the news showing the 10s of thousands of gallons a minute of water being pumped back into Lake Ponchetrane(Sp?). They were talking of all the debris that was clogging the pumps. I wondered how much jewelry and silver and other valuable items were clogging up the pumps and how much was making through the screens and getting blown out into the lake. It would be great if they found stuff in the screens and could get it to original owners. However, I fear for the reality that it might not be possible to identify who owned what and that so many cherished valuables will never be found.

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

wmas, that's something else I hadn't thought of. I wonder exactly what they're pulling out of those filters? ??? Does anyone know how to find out?

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

THe filters a wire mess to stop large objects from going through the pumps. Like 2 x 4s's and other floating debris that gets sucked down the the intake.
The filters screens for that size of pump is about 2 x 2 wire mesh. Coins and jewelry would have to be dropped near the intake to be sucked into the pump.

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

So, nothing that's further out that, say, 20 feet would get sucked in?

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

That is correct!
Any thing in the immediate area of the intake would get pumped thru or stuck the the screen and it depends on the size of screens they use, if any.
Coins and jewelry would be pumped through, if dropped in front of the intake. The intake is normally place in a dug pit, so all the water runs to the pit and is pumped out.

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

Ahhh, that does make sense. So the stuff that came in with or fell into the sea mud would most likely get shoveled up and hauled off to, where, back to the ocean? Or maybe get turned into part of a levee?

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

If you are going down there, a word of warning. Cholera, typoid and other nasties are rampant down there right now. Make sure your shots are up to date, if you have a friend in the medical field see if they can get you a TB proof mask, and WEAR GLOVES. We have 3000+ people moved up here in OK from LA and last night on the wards at the hospital we had 17 sick from the above on the floor, with more coming in every day.

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

Oh, not planning a trip at all. Just saw something that might be on interest to TH'ers in the area, but thanks for the warning!

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

It is a very sad thing to happen to that old great city, But alot of jewlery store's were completely destroyed. I emagine alot of high dollar stuff will be found.

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

No doubt about that at all.

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

Thanks for the info, digger! Happy Hunting!

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

it all sounds good ,but if you knew anything about most of the areas that were flooded..you would not even think of going into them.it would not be worth your life.or valuables.

Re: Please Don't Take This the Wrong Way, But...

I really do not want to offend, but I've been to New Orleans and it was a cest pool before the flood. Quite simply it is the murder capitol of the WORLD. The population of New Orleans is ( reportedly ) about 30% gangs. No thanks guys, I'd rather hit the beach. I am going to Mississippi in November to help with relief and will be taking a few toys. Good luck and HH! Chris
