WHADIFIND ~

Welcome to the forum. I took a quick peek at some U.S. patents but didn't find much so far. There were probably 100+ patents issued that same day. U.S. patents were "Issued" on Tuesdays. "Filing" dates could be just about any day of the week.

May 6, 1890 = Was a Tuesday = Most likely the patent date.

January 3, 1891 = Was a Saturday = :dontknow:

I'll be back if I find anything.

SBB

Of course the dates could be 1990 and 1991

11 tool and machinery patents were issued on 5-6-1890 but without seeing what the item is it's hard telling from what item your tag came from. It's fair to believe other types of patents were also issued on that date.

See if this helps make sense of the other numbers .. (which kind of look like partial dates too, but I'm not sure).

1890 Patent Dates Started In January With - 331,665
1891 Patent Dates Started In January With - 443,987

Which is the same as saying 1890 patent dates ended in December with 443,986

il.27.97 ... April 27, 1897 was also a Tuesday.

0. 23. 90 ... There were two months in 1890 where the 23rd fell on a Tuesday .. Sept and Dec

But I cannot think of any monthly abbreviation that ends with an ... O. 23. 90.

I'm going to take a wild guess with ...

E. BERLINER'S,
GRAMOPHONE,
Patented Nov. 8. 1887.
May 15. 1888. – May 6, 1890.
Feb’y. 19. 1895. – Oct. 29. 1895

OTHER PATENTS APPLIED FOR.

Gramophone by W. Suess - Patent No. 427,279 May 6, 1890

Read more: Emile Berliner and the Birth of the Recording Industry: Home Page

The reason I mention this Gramophone is mainly because of the May 6, 1890 patent date, but also because of the numerous other patent dates associated with it. Plus, the item in question is about the size of a nickel and has what appears to be nail holes, which suggest it might be a metal label/tag that was attached to something partially made of wood. :dontknow:

Most old patents were issued Tuesday but I think there was another day or 2 maybe Thursday but not sure.

It cant be 1990 or 91 because they used numbers not dates.

We are also looking at 4 patents. Ill have them in a second to check with Bobs Gramophone.

Someone reliable here at TN posted that most patents were issued on Tuesday and it sure looks to be true but I may have misunderstood when I passed it on. I have one on Tuesday and 2 on Saturday as well as one on Monday which seems odd.

April would be APR so I think its JUL.
(there are always exceptions to the rule)
What 3 letter month abbreviation ends in O? All I could think is AUG.

It could be a C for DEC 23, 1890 is a Tuesday like you said.

Here's the May 6, 1890 Gramophone patent No. 427,279 by Werner Suess. The text described it as an "improvement" on an earlier patent, but I did not see any other numbers listed. If it is related to WHADIFIND's rusted tag, then the other dates on the tag might be later inprovements ... or spin-offs to it. Please be reminded this is just a wild guess and needs more research.

P.S. ~ And since the only other date we are fairly certain of is Jan 3, 1891, then I'd say there would have to be something "Gramophone" related to that 1891 date or else my theory won't hold up. But irregardless if my guess is right or wrong, the various patent dates are surely related to one another in some manner.

Of interest: 2 patents are Tuesday and the other 2 are Saturday so these may be the key days.

While I havent found the exact casing, Here is a R.H. Ingersol & Bro. watch with 2 of the early patents marked Redirect Notice and the 2 latter patents would most likely be pending.

Big Cy ... and/or anyone

Now let's try to match the holes and patent markings like the ones on WHADIFIND's rusted piece. I'm not sure, but I'm assumming its from an 1897 watch because that's the latest date shown.

Yes its from 1897 or later. Dont forget patents were only good for 17 years. So with an 1890 patent still in effect, it could have been manufactured no later than early 1907. I learned this patent stuff from collecting patented Stanley planes.

Im assuming the date is JAN 13, 1891 NOT JAN 3 because the last 2 watches show this.
