Plan B gives me year's first ring

Hi all. I had intended to hunt some fields from an 1820's farm that I have hunted before. The owner asked me to give him a courtesy call whenever I was going to be on the property because the neighbors always call him to say someone is there. I waited until 9 am to give him time to get up and around. No answer on his cell, so I decided to go hunt some old coal mining trails. These have been in use since at least the mid 1800's, possibly longer.
The little band was found in the trail, and because it is so rocky, just barely under the top. This is the second sterling ring made by Uncas Mfg I have found.

Since the ring is silver and not the more expensive gold, and also only 1.7 grams, in my thinking, there is a very good possibility it may have been dropped by a miner. They worked notoriously hard and for undeserved low wages, and so probably could only afford a small band like this one. I like to think this is the scenario anyway, lol. Thanks for the look, OBN!:coffee2:

Looking good there OD!! WTG, Q.
Thanks, Mr. Q. It was definitely a surprise to find on top of a peak here in the middle of coal mining country. The only other things found along about a mile of the trail I covered other than trash targets were 10 modern cents, lol.

Welcome OD, I grew up, until 12, in a coal mining area. Stories of Tuff times from the elders sure fit your story, many were owned by the Coal Companies.

I bet you've seen the movie " The Molly Maguires"? One of my favorite old movies. It shows how the coal companies kept the workers poor intentionally and basically was legal slavery. Once the miners had a family, there was little they could do to escape the trap the companies kept them in.

Never seen the movie but stories from my Grandfather sound just like what your describing. Company owned all the homes, gave them tokens to buy food from the company store and the list goes on....He was finally able to move my mom and the boys to the other side of the river to have a life after the War. Seeing your sterling ring and your story truly could have been., they had very little and a ring like that would have been a prize possession.

Awesome job on that ring OD!!! Congrats.
That woods looks like a scene straight out of the movie "Wrong Turn". :tongue3:

When you mentioned donkeys and mules using that old mining road I thought you meant Quindy and Dman. :laughing7:

Well done and thanks for the video.

Lol, I thought you were gonna say " and now a jackass too!".
These woods are where a mama black bear gave me a good scare when I found myself closer to her cubs than her. That's why I don't wear headphones.

Don't you love that feeling when you first see what it is :icon_scratch:

Absolutely! I found 4 or 5 last year and was wondering when the first of 2014 would show up. Thanks for looking!

Sweet silver ring there! Dont know how I missed this thread yesterday, lol the ole nightshift daze. Anyway good job on the ring!

Lol, I do believe you're allowed to have that haze, Cjon:tongue3: I am gonna try the original site ( the farm fields ) today. I called yesterday afternoon again and talked to his wife. He was at a seminar yesterday, but she said he'd be home late last night. Good luck!

I can testify to that, my father started out as a coal miner.

Nice save!

Congrats on the ring. It's weird- my plan B sites almost always seem to surprise me with something good. Continued good luck!

Nice silver ring!
Sounds about right, they had little pay and had to buy their own powder, then ended up owing the company store money on pay day! Very hard life, less than acceptable working conditions too.
We have it good today.
