Pin Pointers

Most pointers will locate a dime at 1" away. Frank***************************************************************************************************

...and most cars, you can drive! Right?

I have a Sunray probe and a Garrett pro-pointer. Both are excellent choices and among other things, will locate a target @ 3 times or more of the above stated distance. I purchased both for significantly below "list" price. I have no personal experience with other brands, but spent a good number of hours researching before I made a decision.

Do a bit more homework Sally...check reviews online, and think about your own style of hunting ,needs and budget!

Sorry, but I said list price and it is $160. If you shop around you can usually find a discount, it is so overpriced. I guess you didn't read post #14 about the pro pointer breaking down twice in several months. Frank

Don't worry dude...I read post #14...

I have been using the Propointer for over 2 years....we go metal detecting every weekend in the spring, summer and fall...(I MEAN EVERY WEEKEND) and in the winter when we have a chance...I had 2 Harbors and they are junk...I used the one Harbor for 2 weekends and it broke...and I bought another one and it broke as well after a short period of time...JUNK You get what you pay for.

I bought the Propointer and like I said...I have used it for over 2 years..every weekend...that's well over 1000's of targets being dug and turning it off and on...off and on..etc....This propointer has NEVER failed....EVER

This is based on in the field experience...Hands on field testing....So of course this is my opinion...just letting others know what they could be in for

When I hike 1 or 2 miles in the woods to go detecting..I want to take something that is reliable...that's why I bought the Propointer...overpriced? Not for as much as I use it...It's paid for itself and then some

Keppy
I found the easiest way in sted of a coin ...i just keep a cheap copper fitting around my thumb so easy to do with the PP on slid it the where the PP responds and then back it of just a hair till it is quiet and you got double the death.
Keppy i have enjoyed your posts on here for years, you, Sandman,Bart, Mike give great advice.

Finderskeepers, If your pinpointer sounds off at 3" as you have stated, you have a real problem. It will start sounding off before you even get it in the hole and be of no use.

Doug, My HF pointer is almost 2 years old, and I do admit to replacing the power switch, but then again, I don't have to turn mine off as you do. Mine has a bright blue LED that lights when the target is located. Yes the switch and LED cost me about $3 but I am still light years ahead on cost savings. And then again, I don't have to put a coin on mine, It has a sensitive adjustment. Frank

Frankn, You have to remember that these devices are state of the art and have proximity alert. They are not the touch to find HF type that you are use to. The gentle chirp increase as you approach the target is a definite aid and does not require a blue light to get you on the target. Take the plunge and use one, I feel you will throw rocks at your blue light special.

Frankn, it seems pretty clear that you've never had a propointer in your hand or even read the directions. Not sure why you're such a hater...that's your opinion and your choice.

It's just too bad that you feel the need to come off as some kind of authority to new people on this subject. You CLEARLY are not. I've seen you do it a number of times in the short time I've been here.

Don't worry about hiding your excellence in frugality trophy, I'm sure it means much more to you than anyone else!

finderskeepers,

Frankn is an authority on everything....he only sees things one way....Him and I had a minor misunderstanding in another thread...and you are right...I have seen this AUTHORITY in NUMEROUS other threads as well.

FRANKN...YOUR OWN OPINIONS ARE NOT THE GOSPEL

I'm glad someone else sees this going on....It's very ANNOYING

Sally, As near as I can tell the early Garrett pointers seemed to have a little better history. But you can be assured that if you should develop an issue the company will take care of you. Please reply as to your feelings on this topic.

I have used A Zircon M40 for two years same depth as PP... But the Pro-pointer is far Superior to the any i have used.

I also have an M 40 in my inventory and it did work but it really shines in my wood shop. A little bulky for dirt fishin. They are tough units and have not had any breakdowns.

Finderskeepers, I never claimed to use a pro pointer. My objections are based on the overpricing an inabilily to be modded, also the high failure rate of the circuit boards that have been documented here on T Net.

bowwinkle, When my pinpointer sounds off at 1" on a dime, I have the coin I don't have to pay over a hundred extra to hear it play a variable tone. Frank

Frank, If the cost is such an issue then why is there not an early model Bounty hunter type detector parked in place of that XLT? It would get you within a distance where you could take the HF and get it down to one inch after a fashion. Putting the actual device in your own hands and using it is the point of true comparison.

Sally, I am sorry that your thread got hi jacked by such a strong minded limited experience equipment user. I hope that you will still find at least some good and usable information here anyway.

What Doug didn't mention was his minor misunderstanding was an out and out fabrication of me breaking T Net rules with no backing. That is because it was not true. I would venture a guess that my opinions are worth at the least as much as yours. An mine are backed up by 75 years experience. Frank

I've had a couple of the lower cost one and bought a Garrett last year and once i used it I realized i should have bought it long before. You'll spend much less time fishing in the hole... Although this past Saturday the Tejon was telling something was there, but the Garrett couldn't find it... It turned out to be a single #6 lead bird shot at about 3"... It has nothing to do with the Garrett, but everything to do with the relic loving Tejon!!

Your absolutely right and it's worth every dime it cost.

GAP, Yes I know that, it is just that I run a lot of recycled wood through my planer and it found a home there looking for hidden metal in the wood. I did see where someone did a mod and put a prob end on one and was very happy with the results. It is a very solid tool and is about ten times tougher than the HF units I had plus it has a factory built in blue light.

get the garrett worth every penny.
