Found this item at my 1850's school permission. Penny is for size reference. The decorative piece was attached out of the ground but came apart while lightly brushing the dirt off. I don't remember how it went together. Anyone ever seen anything like it.

A couple more pics after cleaning. I found a patent number although I can't totally make it out. Looks like CT . 12. I imagine that would be for the clasp, not the complete item. Looks to be copper.

Upon closer inspection, I think two numbers have been almost worn off.

This is about what it looked like just out of the ground. Keep in mind the entire piece is slightly larger than a U.S. quarter. The clasp extends about 1/8" on either side of the quarter.

Cool find! Almost reminds me of a hair barrette to hold the smaller detailed braids in place.
