I found it on the creek bed next to a creek in Atlanta where there was heavy fighting during the American Civil War

More info please, I see what appears to be a splinter coming off of your "specimen", can you dig into this object with a knife blade and remove more "splinters"?

Is it hard like a rock or soft?

OK, If it is petrified wood, it would be wood that has over 1000s of years turned into rock, so if it's petrified wood it can chip with enough pressure but not splinter.
