Smittyman and I found ourselves in Philly on Wednesday morning.
We started out early and hunted a public place, where I scored a nice 1924 Buffalo, around 10:00 we headed off to meet our favorite local hunter. Our host took us to an old picnic area, as in NJ, it did not look like a good place to hunt, however, looks would soon be proven to deceive.
As soon as we started swinging, the targets started screaming. It was just unreal, more silvers than cents were found. I have never seen anything like it. I was able to get 9 (yes, one was an OD Nickel) silver coins during what can only be described as a feeding frenzy! The three of us found a total of 31 silver coins in about 2 hours!
I got a 1916 Barber dime, which made my second trifecta in two days! Back to back silver dime trifectas. I also got two sterling rings out of one hole, a silver ring spill! I found an extremely thin, quarter sized, old copper... unfortunately, no detail at all. I found a junk signet ring, eighteen Wheaties and an old transit token that says "Philadelphia". I dug a total of 106 coins in a 12 hour day.
One of the quarters that I found has had the reeded edge modified. I believe that this coin was being turned into a ring, when it escaped from it's owner. I think that someone in the 1950s used a spoon to beat the edge into a domed shape. I think that you continue this until it flattens, then drill the center out. Let me know what you think.
After our host retired for the afternoon, Smittyman and I hit another public place, and I scored two Mercs, bringing my one day silver coin total to eleven! Needless to say, this was my best silver day ever!
I will refrain from gushing on and on about our Philly host, as I know he does not care for that stuff. The people and the good times are the real treasures in this hobby. Thanks buddy!
